What proof have we had that Yerson is capable to step in to the first team if/when the inevitable injury or suspension happens to Collins or Kilman, or even better, both? I appreciate Toti is here, but why gamble? We’ve lost three centre backs and bought one in. And why are we looking to loan Yerson out in the first place if we’re “happy” with him? It’s obvious they wanted to bring someone else in and have failed.
Equally with midfield. It was bordering on gross negligence going in to last season with only three senior midfielders. If we sell Donk and don’t replace him, we’re doing the same thing for a second season, except this time we’re playing all three of them in every game rather than two. It’s 2022 and Connor Ronan is going to be first in line for a start if any of our first choice centre mids need a rest, get injured or are suspended.
Don’t get me wrong, I’m delighted with the incomings we’ve made; but it just seems like they still haven’t learnt their lesson when it comes to squad depth at all. I absolutely agree we shouldn’t be signing players that aren’t good enough, just to make the numbers up - but they’ve had several months to get the squad in shape and they’ve fallen short again.
