Summer 2022 Transfer Window

He is definitely the best of the lot this year but that’s a pretty low bar. I’ve always liked him but there’s too many flaws to his game to hang your hat on him and his availability hasn’t been great.

On the second paragraph we will likely never find out as those teams don’t sign average “playmakers” who don’t run around/put themselves about/press

Just like I said to begin with, I don't see Wolves get their money back because teams that would see him as an obvious upgrade can't afford that price and any teams that can afford him would only see him as a pawn in their side. Though having just checked Brighton's transfer history they might be more likely than I'd initially assumed, they spunked more money on both Trossard and Jahanbakhsh, I'd see Podence as a better footballer than both of those.

You think Pod is better than Trossard? I’d be delighted with a swap but I’ll bet very few, if any, Brighton fans would be.

I don't think there's a great deal in it on balance. Can't say that I recall anything notable I've ever seen Trossard do but then at the same time I've probably never seen him have a complete no show like Podence tends to from time to time.

I agreed with that assessment.

Trossard is ok, decent goal return in goal shy Brighton team. Speculative punt on a high peforming player in a shit league. Probably about as good as they can afford/attract so I think they will be relatively happy with how it’s gone.

Jahanbakhsh was obviously terrible. But they obviously hadn’t learnt not to sign players with mediocre records from the Dutch league.

They were all a punt on players from weaker leagues hoping they could step up. But they aren’t punts anymore as everyone knows what they are about. I’d be amazed if someone like Brighton would want to sink £20m into him.

Not related to this, but do midtable PL actually every sign players from each other?

Ings went from Southampton to Villa last year. Much rarer than it used to be though.

Imagine Podence will go abroad if he does leave. Could be used in a player plus cash deal, especially in the Portuguese league I’d imagine

I get finances of the covid world may have changed things potentially, but I feel like the player plus fee deals that frequently get discussed in the press, here, but fans elsewhere etc, never actually happen.

When was the last time this actually happened?

I think it's always better for clubs to receive cash rather than players due to the way FFP works.

It happens a lot in Italy, but is/was often a money laundering exercise.
Seperate deals but Jota and Hoever sort of were. Adama and Trincao would have been, be them again seperate deals

I checked that as was the only one I could think of. It wasn't a swap as they are separate deals with totally separate payment structures.

I really like the Athletic as an entity, but for that to be the first article after the performance at the weekend it feels like some kind of propaganda, I can't believe that's from an independent source.
Added to that is an appalling article from Britney

His lack of tactical knowledge never ceases to amaze me along with his general knowledge of how football works.

The piece itself on transfers is clearly a briefing from the club that no money is to be spent and the answers are within.

He also intimates that Lage is here next season. Much to DW's delight I would imagine.

Not read it yet, but the comments below his articles always surprise me. Always very pro club, manager and his writing.

Yeah everything of his recently smacks of a "we have the wage budget for 12th so show some gratitude you little oiks"

There's actually a hint of dissidence in them this time. It's piece that has completely ignored the temperature of the room

12th in the wages league is a load of bollocks anyway. We’re only likely there due to the small squad. I’m sure if there was a “top 15 player wages” we’d be pretty high.
