Summer 2022 Transfer Window

Need to dig out the threads from around the time when he left, but my memory of it all is that:

a) we'd switched from 3-5-2 to 3-4-3, he wasn't as effective as a wide forward, but it was a necessary tactical switch for the good of the overall squad that he was the unfortunate loser from (with Traore the opposite, a big beneficiary)
b) after a strong start his general form had plateaued (particularly in the second half of his final season here), there was a sense that his ceiling wasn't as high as we'd initially thought, so even if £45m would turn out low it shouldn't be by that much in the long term
c) it wasn't just £45m, we were also getting a youth prospect with a decent rep thrown in with Hoever

Of course all three of those turned out to be mistaken impressions (and how), but I don't remember a huge amount of gnashing and wailing about him being stolen before his time when he left. More that, as much as it would've been nice to keep him, we'd have to accept growing pains like it as part of the process of the team maturing into the PL.
That's not how I remember it but there you go.

It was a long season and Jota started 7 out of the last 10 games with 3 on the bench.

He did start the game against Sheffield United on the bench but I wouldn't but we can't read much into that given he went to Liverpool 6 days later.

He didn't lose his place as such but he was rotated more heavily than at any point previously. He was no longer one of the first names on the teamsheet.

18/19 Jota was majestic and Jota is streaky.

Don't see a lot wrong with what I've said there and how he lost his place.

But you keep digging, you've obviously got a lot of time on your hands.

I think that's fair he wasn't, but he hadn't hit a plateau or wasn't as good as we thought he was.

He was adjusting to Adama like everybody else.

We now know Adama is fucking shit and tends to ruin every team he's in. That was a mistake on Nuno's part.

I just went to the Summer 2020 transfer thread as my recollection was similar to that of proslo especially the change in formation. Nothing wrong with what you said just your recollection!

Nowt wrong with my recollection petal.

The biggest mistake he made imo. I'm not convinced it's true but if Liverpool were interested in Adama first but we priced them out then sold Jota for less we are idiots.

Nuno kept blowing Adama up , kept referring to him as a ' special player ' in interviews . He might be special at some things , but he's not very special at a lot of things .
Nuno seemed to have a blind spot when it came to him .

Generally managers are vain and think they have the ability to do things with players that no one else can. It's not exclusive to Nuno, which was the main reason I had hope we'd be able to shift Adama to someone else who thought they would be able to unlock what no one else has.

This is absolutely the crux of it all, yeah. At the time it made some sense (IMO, at least), but whatever was happening with Jota's form was because he was in a Nuno team, not because he'd hit any kind of ceiling.

Certainly agree with that.

I think he honestly thought he was Barca bound, hence not signing a new contract, the embarrassment must be crushing
Embarrasment lol this is a guy who refused to pay his gardener properly and when he told him to do one just let the garden go wild
