Summer 2021 transfer window

Pretty sure Ampadu/Jagielka/Bryan is a long way worse than that.

We need improvements there (notwithstanding our best player in that position is currently injured) but we have conceded 4 goals in our last 7 league games.

If we have to go to the bottom of the league to find someone worse it kinda illustrates my thoughts.

Roll on the summer!

Albion's are definitely worse too! Bartley and O'Shea FFS.

I wouldn't have any of Newcastle's either, all shite. Or Leeds.

Lascelles is shite. He's a right footed Berra.

That's not the question though, is it.

Adam Proudlock was better than Robert Taylor. Doesn't mean he was the answer.

Lascelles would be our second best centre half in a 2 the moment we signed him. Depends on what level you aspire to be at, he's a competent midtable PL CH. That's where we are at now, although I'd like us to aim higher

I'm not saying he is the answer, I'm saying we're at the races when it comes to the worse CBs in the division. If Lascelles is shite and he's better than Donk then it kinda suggests we have poor CBs compared to the rest of the division.

Obviously Donk is a back up but I don't think Coady is much better as a CB.

We're not though are we, you started off talking about as a unit and demonstrably Sheff Utd, Newcastle, Albion and Leeds are miles worse, saying "I'd take Lascelles" (we shouldn't, he's rubbish) doesn't change that.

I know we need improving there. Fast.

Dendoncker hadn't played there for about a year until we had to stick him back in that position. We never do it by design.

As much to do with our defensive mindset as the quality of our actual defenders though?

Nothing has really changed from when we were leaking goals in terms of mindset. I don't recall the forum bemoaning us going too gung-ho at any point.

We just stopped doing quite so much stupid stuff, albeit the goal on Saturday is nonsense.

I meant as individuals, but with hindsight used the wrong separator.

I still don't think many clubs, bar the absolute dross, would want any of our CBs.

Apart from the Liverpool game and the freak WHU game we haven't really leaked that many goals this season, when we did it coincided with a little spell playing a back four in January.

The 7 games in a row you're talking about came straight after the WBA game, which was the culmination of conceding 7 in three games with a back four. We've had 5 at the back almost entirely since then.

OK we've only conceded 4 goals, but we've only scored 6, and two of those were in the game where Arsenal imploded. We make a considerable sacrifice of our attacking potency to protect our defence from being exposed.

I do think we will go to a back four when Boly is fit though, and especially as Jonny is back now. So will be interesting to see how that affects our play this time.

The first was from a penalty, conceded when they had eleven men. The second when they had ten men.

That's correct. I've edited the post so the overall point isn't diminished(y)

Yeah, but that's where we are. We don't have a proper striker. Fabio is young, José is a dreadful player, so what are we supposed to do? Attack anyway?

You can only play with the deck you have.

If a Premier League club can't attack because one player is injured then something's wrong somewhere. It's not like we've just been promoted.

The lesson is don't just have one striker in your deck...but, regardless, we still have plenty of creative/attacking talent in Neto, Podence, Traore, Neves, Moutinho, maybe the wing-backs and Vitinha too? Yet we've been passive and conservative for a good part of this season.

We need better players at CB rather than having to rely on fielding six or seven defensive-minded players while we hope for one of the wide forwards to score a worldie at the other end
