Spoilt Princesses moaning about Media Coverage of Wolves

I liken it a bit to when I somehow got shoehorned into a sales job selling fasteners to German companies.

(This was not how the job was advertised)

You hired me on the basis of my linguistic capabilities and on that front, it'll be pretty damn flawless, I'll guarantee you that. But I'm not a salesman in a million years and I know less than nothing about the product, so the end result is going to be absolutely shite. I need to know what I'm talking about, even if I am fluent in the language you want. And I don't.

She hasn't got a scooby. She can't write properly about Wolves any more than I could write about electricity distribution systems. The words will all look quite nice but they won't mean anything, as I don't know. Although let's not go overboard, she isn't *that* accomplished. Broadly competent I suppose, especially compared to Joey Joe Joe who is still probably handing his pieces in after a bit of Crayola fun.

I don't think the paper cares about quality all that much though. As I've said before, I can knock up 1,500-2,500 word pieces in an hour or two. They take days to send out measly 500 word reviews that may as well not exist. Their opinion pieces are shambolic. They have no grasp on even recent history.

Pay peanuts, etc etc.

Depends what they want tbh.

They currently have at least three people staffing the Wolves desk. None of them are any good.

I'd rather pay one good person.

A mate of mine who is a Sky sub editor worked his way up through local journalism, as was the way then (he is mid forties). Now they recruit straight from uni, and talking to him last night he was lamenting the state of local journalism these days as a result.

I wouldn't work for them, no. They'd want way too much filler that I have no interest in writing, they'd want me to dial back on certain areas regarding opinion, I have no interest in working with or for Nathan Rioja, I'd want too much time on niche pieces, essentially I want majority control over what I write and I wouldn't get it. Plus I haven't forgiven them for being a horrific right wing rag for 20+ years yet.

They could actually afford me though, I'm pretty cheap. There's one of life's sad ironies for you.

So basically we need Timmy II to have an accident and then install you at The Athletic?

It's just weird though. If you want to play Vinagre then you have to leave out one of Jonny or Doc, she literally just gives Jonny the same mark as Ruben Jr...so we're leaving out the bloke who scored the winner against Man City, are we?

They all played well (everyone did on Sunday) but the team is what it is. They're not in for a reason. It's a stupid statement. And don't repeat yourself almost word for word in 3 out of 11 tiny reviews!

Same old story as well, published nowhere near after full time and yet each write up is about 40-50 words long. You either go quick off the mark and brevity is acceptable (if you're going to follow it up later on), or you take longer and bother writing properly.

Suppose I'm lucky, haven't read any newspaper stories for decades, just got no interest in biased, badly written pieces. Tbh its a problem knowing where to get news info from, sports news isn't so bad as general news though

Get an Athletic subscription, it'll cost you a couple of quid a month.

I'm still undecided on The Athletic tbh. There's a hell of a lot of filler on there.

Plus Timbo isn't actually that good. We were chatting in the pub about it before the City game - it's never great when you're all saying "yeah, I don't really like his opinions".

Being better than he was at the E&S is no high bar (I'd argue his Twitter output is actually worse now, so try hard). It's Mark Rankine in 1995 all over again.

I will now make similar comments as I did to Dan in the pub before the Manchester City game.

Rosie CAN write. Her abilities as a composer of a sentence are better than those that Spiers showed at the E&S (although his Athletic output suggests he is on at least the same level).

However, and this is the BIG however...You are taking over a local correspondent role at a club you don't know, a team you don't know, a fanbase you don't know. Get some really solid research done and then use that knowledge to augment your writing abilities. DON'T EVER put out trite opinions in fifty words on players and performances and then stick by them when they don't stack up.

I fear she is on a sticky wicket at the moment.

As mentioned earlier in the thread, they currently have Nathan Rioja, Joey Reans and Rosebud earning three salaries.

They could get rid of them and get one good person to do the same amount of work for probably less money.

It's bizarre in terms of strategy.

Put an appeal out on Twitter,if she wants to know what's going on,and build her wolves knowledge Royal London before a game is the place to be

She's welcome to talk to me any time she likes. I'm a very visible presence, on and offline.
