Scottish Independence watch

No. They are a bunch of obnoxious arseholes though. One guy followed me for 5 minutes through Dundee today because I wouldn't stop and talk to him.

Whatever the result, there could be a real fracture in Scottish life, couldn't there? One side is going to be seriously unhappy with the other after next week.

Scotland has nowhere near the oil reserves you lot in Norway have, and there has been no provision for saving any of the revenues made in the last 40 years. What is left is plentiful but much harder to extract, hence higher costs.

They can have it tbf.

£1bn man! ;) Every year!

The Norwegian oil fund is insane, over £550billion.

I think the nationalists will be very bitter in the event of a No vote, the SNP deputy whose name escapes me hasn't ruled out another referendum.

Think fish Trevor.

Salmond and Sturgeon.

IIRC much of Mayfair is owned by Norway these days.

There is no happy ending to this - as Vicarious says, whatever happens, a substantial proportion of the population are going to be pissed off.

I have long wished for greater federalisation of our country, what London does has nothing to do with what Birmingham does, which has nothing to do with what the Black Country does, which has nothing to do with what Manchester does...and so on. We are a mongrel nation and centralisation, especially around the bubble that is London, practically a City state in itself, makes little sense these days.

The latest odds.

Best Yes 2-1
Best No 5/11

It seems like the bookies don't think it will be a Yes vote.

Yeah they buy alot of properties and stuff in Britain...

Do you really think (half) the general population will react badly?

The population of Scotland, yes. For in a straight yes or no choice, close to 50% of them will get the opposite of what they wanted.

I dread to think what will happen to the goalposts at Wembley if they ever visit again.

There's been some comparisons drawn with Quebec in Canada, they were something like 6 points ahead in the opinion polls for breaking away but on the day many could not go through with it.

A bit like the John Major/Neil Kinnock General election, it was too close to call but the electorate preferred the devil they knew.

Wow,much bigger issue than I thought.

I know it's not really comparable but when we voted no to EU the losing side just shrugged their shoulders and got on with life...independence is obviously a much bigger issue tho.

I have more sympathy with the Québécois cause. They genuinely do speak another language and have another culture.

I seem to recall their question being somewhat loaded though? Not a straight yes or no as we have here.

So,is Wales next?

Are there similar groups wanting the opposite, wipe the borders away and just be one nation?

The Welsh don't want independence.

I want a federal state along the lines of Germany, where regions have full reign to define their own policies which fit the bespoke needs of their communities, but I am very much in the minority there.

But in the days leading up to that vote, something like 100,000 Canadians went to Quebec and held a series of rallies to say 'We love you, please stay.' I get the feeling it would be hard to find 100,000 English people willing to do the same between now and next Thursday.

Again this morning, the today radio programme was dominated by the independence issue. And while both sides put forward reasonable arguments, there is every likelihood that most people will already have decided which way they will vote. So the big guns from both sides are preaching to the converted. Personally I think that Scotland will vote no.
