Scottish Independence watch

Had to. You can't hang your hat on a position like that and not move when it fails.

I have access and rather whizzy wifi which is nice. This opens the door for that ghastly woman sturgeon to have a free run at first minister. Not sure that is actually that great. Saying that, I would expect labour to win the next Scottish election. SNP is a one policy ticket and no matter how he dresses it up, salmond has failed on that policy. What need of an SNP vote in future. There won't be another chance of a referendum for a generation.

I think he was always likely to step down if he did not win the vote. I suppose he felt he had to fall on his sword.

Salmond resigns!

Quite disappointed by that tbh. He only ever wanted DevoMax and I thought he had a responsibility to the 45% of Scots who voted for an independent Scotland to see it out until Holyrood was given the added powers they were promised.

Quite happy about the result though, close enough to make ensure that real change will be forthcoming but not so close that YES voters could feel massively aggrieved about just losing out. Tbh if in the run up to the referendum it was clear that No was going to win by a big margin I would've probably voted YES.

I also have to say that bar one dig at Cameron for already failing to deliver on one promise (which dave actually now has no choice about as miliband has backed out of the timetable), that was a very dignified resignation speech.

Salmond looks fucking knackered, but there was a smile back. Reminded me of the day after thatcher had to step down. She was actually bubbly because the pressure was off.

Miliband has not backed out of the timetable, Cameron has now linked it to the West Lothian issue. Miliband will not sign off the two together. Publicly at least today is the first time Cameron has linked the two together.

Hoping for some kind of localised natural disaster to hit George Square right now. Excellent way to spoil a respectful debate by both sides. Why oh why does it have to be like this? :shake:

Oh and to the utter douchenozzle that BBC have reporting in George Square. You should probably stay away from words like 'Loyalist'. Idiots everywhere. Unstoppable, uncontrollable, relentless idiots.

Didn't take Westminster long to renege on the deal, suckers. If the UK sat down with a blank piece of paper could they find a system of government to suit all parties?

Whatever changes are proposed won't be too radical as that might threaten the status quo. A new electoral system would be nice start though. Scotland shows what turnout can be achieved when everyone knows their vote will count.

I heard someone say on the BBC last night, that Salmond lost the election but won the campaign. That he has changed the landscape of British politics for good.

Graylings comments

In Scotland justice is wholly devolved. As Secretary of State and Lord Chancellor, I have virtually no role there. But Scottish MPs today can still vote on my proposals to toughen the justice system in England and Wales. That clearly cannot continue.”

In my view he's absolutely right.

Of course he is .

He's right if you take what he is saying at face value. Of course we all know that his ultimate target is an electoral system that increases his party's chances of winning.
