Revisiting old albums

Listened to Achtung Baby all the way through yesterday on the drive home. Sometimes gets lost under all the fluff and nonsense from U2 but they’ve made some great albums.

It's ace when you develop music taste from your parents. My dad was massively into Clapton, the Stones, the Who, Hendrix, Deep Purple, Budgie, Wishbone Ash, Skynryd, Led Zepp and Janis Joplin. Really set me off on my musical exploration of guitar music.

My mum was the Beatles fan and also loved Abba. I got less from that, although I always appreciate Abba had stunning song writing skills even if it wasn't my cup of tea.

That's beautiful mate, unfortunately I had very little in common with my dad, especially music, he was more of a Mario Lanzer fan. My taste was aided by my older brother, Stones, Kinks, Peter Greens Fleetwood Mac etc.
I feel very fortunate to have lots in common with my kids including music, been with them to see a variety of bands including.
Metallica, Ash, Muse, JJ72, Dropkick Murphys, Flogging Molly, plus others.

Took my stepson to see Death Angel, Metallica and Slayer. He insisted on the last as it was their last tour and he didn't want to miss it. Since then, he has been off to see Behemoth, Slipknot and co. I would love to take him to see Rammstein but his natural dad is a huge fan, so I think I would be denying something really important if I did that.

My dad was a bit of a rocker who's favourite song was Virginia Plain by Roxy Music and he had Jeff Wayne's War Of The Worlds on vinyl. My mum liked Queen and ABBA.

Set me up nicely. I still have a lot of those vinyl albums and 45s in my loft.

My Dad has given me two obsessions in my life (and not much else tbh) - Wolves & Leonard Cohen. Not too bad on balance.

He was doing alright until Slipknot got involved!
Slipknot are alright. Bloody good live. I forgot to mention Queen myself. Both my parents loved them and so that is a big part of my childhood. When they had ridiculously boozy parties in the early eighties my dad would always finish the evening with American trilogy by Elvis and then God Save the Queen (Queen version) to signal the festivities were done (usually about three AM). There were people singing using hoover attachments as microphones as I want to break free had been on recently. Very messy. No wonder I am an alcohol disaster!

They're the only ones in the list I like! 😢
I secretly struggle to go back to Metallica.

Had a phase in my teens when they were literally the only thing I listened to. Even Load/ReLoad and St. Anger got worn out in my CD player.

ReLoad is fine. There are great tracks there. St Anger is unbelievably bad. It should never be a struggle to go back to Metallica. As long as you are listening to the first four albums. Puppets tour they were at their absolute peak, but Damaged Justice was incredible too.

The production on the early albums is too harsh for my old man sensibilities.

What????? Buy new ears. Or alternatively the re-mastered box sets. I have Kill Em All and Lightning. Desperately want Puppets but it is over £200 if you can find it now. The production on Lightning is superb.

Ehh.

There's something about the guitar tone that I can't quite put my finger on. You're right that it's not really the production as such... More an artistic choice by Hetfield and Hammett, I imagine (listening to the title track as I type this).

The songs still kick ass, don't get me wrong there.

You are a lot younger than me. That production was my musical childhood. I adore the guitar tone and spent most of the late eighties trying to find it! I wanted the Hetfield GOD sound. Lightning possibly has a little too much reverb, I will grant that. But the guitars on Puppets are epic. Justice is a lovely crunch but slightly too dry without the bass up in the mix.

The snare on AJFA always bugged me more than the snare on St. Anger, if I haven't blasphemed enough today. Gimme that clang over a soft *puft*.

Sounded like the drumhead was made of paper.

You, me, and Boozad need to discuss this when you get over the pond for a game, Alcohol and probably my amps and guitars would end up getting involved.

The snare on AJFA IS way too dry. No depth to it. Toms are the same. It is a billion times better than St Anger though. That is like someone thrashing buttocks with a pair of wet asparagus.
