REFERENDUM RESULTS AND DISCUSSION THREAD

Lots of people dislike immigration.

I dislike mushrooms - that doesnt mean that no-one else is allowed to eat them.

We should be basing government policy on facts an evidence, not on whether someone gets the creeps when they hear a foreign language on the bus.

So when we see polls confirming that a large percentage of people in the UK are concerned about current levels of Immigration over the last few years, why is it dismissed by certain types of people ? Have those concerns ever been discussed on here or are people reluctant to discuss it on here through fear of being labelled a racist ?

Yo, Kirstie Allsopp, tell me where to live! This should give you a decent steer...

Perhaps you would like to have a go at answering the question as to why over 70% of people in Lincolnshire voted to Leave the EU (75% in Boston) and 63% of people in Wolverhampton voted to Leave the EU. Serious question, do you just dismiss them all as racists ?

See my next post. Or previous post to this one. The next one after the one you quoted I mean. Look, just read my entire posting history and I'm sure you'll find it.

I'm not sure I've ever dismissed any group of people as racists. Again, feel free to check my posting history and come back to me if you find where I have.

And since we're asking people to second guess the reasons for the actions of whole groups of people, can you explain why 78.3% of people in Foyle voted to Remain in the EU and 78.5% of people in Hackney did the same?

Firstly, we don't have unlimited immigration. We have freedom of movement within the EU, but we have the ability to control immigration from outside the EU.

I understand completely that "a massive percentage of people" have concerns about immigration. I'm not an idiot. What I don't understand is what your concerns are.

So I've answered your question, are you going to have the courtesy to answer mine yet? What are your concerns around immigration? What are immigrants doing that means we should cut it off?

How can you say we do not have unlimited immigration ? My understanding is that Freedom of Movement means that anyone who lives in a country that is a member of the EU, can come here freely ? So there are no controls on numbers coming in ?

Perhaps it's a generation issue ? Personally, like many others, I do feel uncomfortable about the unprecedented levels of Migrants coming into our towns, suburbs. It really annoys me when I hear people say, "white working class people are just lazy and don't want to work, that's why we need so many unskilled, hard-working East Europeans to do the jobs that they won't do" How did this ever come to happen ? Perhaps it started with Thatcher ? As someone who has worked all of his life, I cannot understand how a generation of black or white 'underclass' has been allowed to exist for so long. To the extent that they have been disregarded, thrown on the scrap heap at 18, to justify why we need to bring in so many unskilled workers from outside the UK. Why would a country treat it's own people so despicably ? Why are white working class boys still the largest under-achieving ethnic group in our schools in 2017 ? (Plenty of unbiased links available for that one too).

It's not just about Black / White though. I remember reading this some time ago, when Ipsos MORI produced a Poll, saying that the longer foreign-born people have lived in the UK, the more likely they are to be less keen about immigration. Again, older generation ?

If all of this carries on over the next 5-10 years, do we just stoke up angry feelings of abandonment and discontent that eventually explodes ?
Or can we all rest easy in the knowledge that they will be too interested in their drugs and the Jeremy Kyle show to be even remotely interested in getting a job and leading a 'normal' life, innit ?

Indeed. Lazy generalizations are wrong. Like this one, for example:

Or can we all rest easy in the knowledge that they will be too interested in their drugs and the Jeremy Kyle show to be even remotely interested in getting a job and leading a 'normal' life, innit ?

I dont know why the people of Lincolnshire and Wolverhampton dislike immigration. Do you?

I would suggest that you know why they voted that way and it suits your agenda not to talk about the reasons why.

Vis, you don't do irony do you ? Perhaps I should have used inverted commas ? Don't you think it sounds like a quote from a middle class Daily Mail columnist. Or were you being deliberately obtuse ?

You haven't really answered my question though have you? All you've said basically is there are too many immigrants coming over and they're "taking our jobs" Still don't understand what your concerns are.

What are the immigrants doing that concern you?

I have a good idea why they did in Hackney.

Its very strange how you guys come across as fearless defenders of truth, but get very coy when asked to actually say what you think.

THM and ProgWolf are allowed to infer why entire counties voted the way they did, but the rest of us arent allowed to infer that those two are racists.

How strange.
