REFERENDUM RESULTS AND DISCUSSION THREAD

It was all supposed to happen the day after the vote as I recall, but similarly to those guys who think the world is going to end, the dates keep getting revised...

No, most people predicted (and still predict) that Britain will slowly and surely, over time, become a poorer nation with far less influence on the world stage having deliberately taken itself out of the world's largest trading bloc.
Supporters of Brexit remind me of that story that Steve McQueen tells in the Magnificent 7 - '"It reminds me of that fellow back home that fell off a ten storey building. As he was falling people on each floor kept hearing him say, "So far, so good."'

Except you've deliberately jumped and are expecting a soft landing.

As does the amount of time Brexiteers predict it will take for the UK economy to recover. It's gone from immediate land of milk and honey to a tough decade which will be worth it in the end.

Farage has now said a 2nd referendum would be a good idea.

You couldn't make this shit up. Fucking hell.

Indeed. The mantra is now 'Well, it wont be as bad as everyone is predicting'. But if its going to be even slightly bad, why do it?

Blue passports?

Said it all along. We will not get a better deal with the EU than we have now. At best we will get exactly the same as we have now (so what was the point) and most likely it will be a worse deal. So then it will rely on whether we can negotiate a better trade deal with other countries than the EU, which we can't do until we leave, so again things will be worse. Plus then you have to trust these chancers to get us that deal after.

The other big argument was "we can make our own laws now" yet I still haven't heard one law that people want to change

Indeed. Only this morning from Cruella - "Because we recognise their value, we will incorporate all existing EU environmental regulations into domestic law when we leave."

I mean, good and all, but remind me again why we're leaving...

Our Nige may be many things (a racist, a narcissist, a liar, a fraud, a toady, a shill) but he isn't completely stupid. He knows he's going to end up very much on the wrong side of history here. So he wants a way out, which a nice narrow Remain victory would provide. Hurrah for another 20 years of bitching about the EU to keep him relevant without the country sinking.

Should I be getting excited about the prospect of a 2nd referendum or will the Government just plough on through with a car crash Brexit regardless?

He's said it because it'll get him more exposure, not because he wants it, or thinks it will happen.

I think Farage has started believing his own hype, and is convinced if a 2nd ref were to happen, it would be over 60% in favour of leave. I'm not so sure, however do feel that leave in particular have hardened their position (as TT alluded to on the QT thread not long ago).

However, May is in too weak a position to even consider for any moment a 2nd ref. Which is a shame, as if ref2 were called, the tory party would likely implode. Every call May has made to attempt to strengthen her position has backfired. There is no way she would consider such a risk, in spite of it being in the national interest to do so, as no decision she/her cabinet have made has been in the national interest.

Let's look at the facts. Theresa May came to power when nothing at all about Brexit had been decided. It hadn't even been formally decided that Parliament would act on the referendum result, being as in legal terms it was non-binding (we all know this was a formality of course).

So what did she do?

- Announced we would leave the Single Market and the Customs Union, for no reason - the option to stay within that framework was by no means off the table
- Invoked Article 50 when there was no deadline for us to do so, without us doing any preparatory work whatsoever
- Put Davis, Fox and Johnson at the head of negotiations
- Called a General Election AFTER invoking A50, thus wasting two months of our own time

Basically think of the most sensible course of action. Then think of the opposite, and that's what this cretinous Prime Minister will do.
