Palace (H), 22/11/25, 3pm - Build Up & Match Thread

He’s also one of the players who has done every training session with him because he didn’t get called up for Zimbabwe this time round.

Tbh even if I don't agree with it I do get why a manager would play him initially. Especially a guy like Edwards who isn't going to focus on much more than defensive solidarity, work rate and character as a response to the situation we find ourselves in.

The test will be when he drops him, if at all. If Edwards has anything about him then I'd expect it to happen as early as the Forest home game. I fear I'll be disappointed on that front though.

Oh shit, we’ve got a game today!

From all of RE’s comments so far, he’s going to be focusing on work rate and desire. Munetsi, for all his technical limitations, ticks both of those boxes - so I’m of the opinion he’ll be a guaranteed starter.

I think it might be Munetsi & JRB off JSL with Arias and Tolu the ‘impact’ players off the bench.

Right back is a complete and utter mess whoever we pick. I’d almost prefer to see what Yerson can offer out there, but I don’t see RE as a guy who’s going to reinvent the wheel, so it’ll probably be Hoever. Hugo B will be at LWB because Edwards already knows him & he’ll want to take a look at Wolfe in training (he’s also been away). He’ll go with Gomes & Andre in the middle which means, good as they are, we’ll lack a huge amount of creativity and threat from the middle of the pitch.

This is the thing - even if you can muster the smallest bit of enthusiasm at the thought of a new manager with fresh ideas, he’s ultimately got the same unbalanced shite to work with on the pitch, so that enthusiasm soon disappears.

My Palace supporting mate at work told me they’d “never won a PL game after an international break”. I haven’t fact checked that, but if it’s the case, that will soon change today. I think we have no chance.

If it wasn’t clear, this is what I’m expecting -

Johnstone
Santi Krejci Toti
Hoever Gomes Andre H. Bueno
Munetsi JSL JRB

[cyber]The fact that we haven't won yet, new manager bounce, etc, only works for other teams against us too. Also, we don't win in November.[/cyber]

As underwhelmed as I was with RE's appointment, I am looking forward to welcoming him back to Molineux and seeing how he sets the side up, who he picks and how he manages the game. I liked Vitor and was sad how it ended but this is a new era now so let's hope we see some kind of improvement as we bloody need something to hang on to.

For me, we aren't going to start winning loads of games 1-0 so he needs to find an attacking spark as well as tightening up at the back, and that means probably getting some kind of consistent tune out of Arias or Lopez.

What a fucking waste of money Tolu was (not him as a player, just how pointless when we already have JSL who isn't getting dropped OR playing with Tolu), could have spent that money on some kind of pacy/creative option to turn to right now

This is where I’m at. More defensive players chucked in the lineup simply doesn’t make us more effective defensively. So, despite the many problems with it, he needs to do something different with personal and formation going forward. And Arias and Lopez are simply what we have. I know I’ll be disappointed, as I know he won’t do it and instead we’ll be hearing a variation on the ‘at least we tried hard and that’s progress’ justification later today. But there we are.

Do we not think Tolu will get more opportunities under Edwards? I suppose we'll have a better idea of what we 'to look forword to' later on.

I reckon it'll be a 'Saunders vs Blackburn' performance. 1-1, late Munetsi equaliser. Everyone gets overly excited about absolutely nothing and then we get hammered by Villa next week.

I don't disagree, but you're right to say you'll be disappointed if he doesn't pick the likes of Arias, Tolu, JSL, Lopez etc, because there's absolutely no way he's doing that.

I think most managers new to their role in challenging circumstances start at the back and make their way forward.

I’d start at the back by picking new full backs. As the ones we’ve played have been demonstrably hopeless at defending. And attacking. We shouldn’t need to watch them again to learn that. But we will.

I think he will need a bit of time to familiarise himself with the players in all fairness.
