Oscar Pistorius

The section of the South African Law she quoted allows for him to serve only one sixth of his sentence in prison (8 months) and is then eligible for house arrest for the remainder of the sentence via a parole board

No appeal to the sentence from Oscar.

Probably knows he has got as light a sentence as possible from Judge Tetley

He'll probably be released in 10 months & the rest will be under house arrest.

Ridiculous really, considering how long this has dragged on for. I think OP can consider himself a very lucky man, indeed.

10 months has been quoted by BBC too......

she simply middled it! half of what the prosecution wanted and 5 more than the defence wanted. He'll scream persecution in jail and be out for christmas.

Although just seeing one of the prosecution attorneys sounding very much like they plan to appeal the actual verdict.

Why, what's Langers done?

Pistorius is very fortunate to get such a light sentence, though it was not unexpected. Mutterings about being white and having money.

It's fair enough people think a person should be punished for a crime, particularly one as bad as this. But is prison the answer? Do I think Pistorius needs to be kept off the street as he is dangerous? No. Do I think a life in prison will reform him? No I think he has already reformed.

Not dangerous? He's a gun toting psychopath with 'issues' who murdered his girlfriend and then lied to cover his tracks. I think he's dangerous and I think he should pay the price

Who knows what actually happened. But it does sound dodgy.

But I don't think he would do it again

And? I don't think many killers would have done it again, but why does that give them carte blanche to walk the streets.

I'm not saying it does (well I am sort of). But prison isn't really an effective punishment.

Angels can make an honest mistake and kill, and therefore go to prison for x years. Which effectively wastes tax payers money when they could actually be benefiting society by working.

Pistorius is no angel.

Look at the other offences and incidents from the trial. With a gun he is somewhat less than trustworthy.

I'm not saying he is angel? Just trying to highlight prison doesn't fix/solve anything and can actually be detrimental to society.

Because I was making the point that prison doesn't always solve anything. Whether he goes to prison for 10, 5 or 2.5 years doesn't really change anything. It's not going to reform him and he'll be back on the street regardless.

All an increased sentence does is make people say it's fair. But that's all it achieves.

Pistorius' punishment of having his career ruined, income streams ended for life, living knowing he's a killer, living knowing everyone thinks he's a killer, is worse than him spending a few more years in prison.

So his sentence is just a number. It's not going to change him and him being in prison for a few more years isn't going to make the world a safer place IMO.

So I'm just pointing out that yes he has got a light sentence, but a longer sentence doesn't really change anything other than make you or I think it's fair.

As a society imprisonment is a punishment, should he not be punished for his crime?

For an effective society, are we solely looking to punish offenders? Or should we include rehabilitation as part of that process?
Just locking em up & throwing away the key does little more than cost money.
