New - The things that really annoy you

Never been to the US so not sure how it works. However if I'm sat at a bar watching a Wolves game and I have four beers, I'm not paying you $1/$2 on top every single time you pass me one.

It's not even a thing in UK pubs and never has been. At best "one for yourself" at the end of a session or if you've just ordered a massive round for a group of people that clearly takes ages.

I actually googled "and one for yourself" the other day as I wondered what it actually meant. Apparently some places would have a set amount of say £1 and keep it/add it to tip jar. Some places they would actually pick a drink, add that to your order and do the same

I've only really seen it on Only Fools and my Dad doing it in actual old school pubs so was just curious

My experience

Sat at the bar or table service: Will either charge you per drink or tab. Either way no tip per drink. Tip is left when paying the bill/final drink.

On the subject of tipping to curry favour, a few months ago we were at a place where most people were all-inc but opted for breakfast only. The waiters were all over anyone without the rubber wristband and it soon became clear why - if you bunged them a few quid at the start of the evening your bill at the end of the night would miraculously disappear. Same thing happened in the restaurants too.

Was a bit risky for both parties and they’d no doubt be sacked on the spot if caught but fuck it, everyone was at it. Surprising how quick morality evaporates when there’s money involved but I was happy for the money to go to them than the Chinese/Russian/Singaporean (etc) investors paying them a pittance in the first place.

States big on buy a drink for people in their armed forces or veterans.
Was in NY during memorial weekend and tons of people popped money behind the bar. Then the good people would rock up in their uniform and get pissed for free.

Was tempted to find a fancy dress shop...

Sorry not cruise motivated.
My beef, Rice and Kane.
Ffs buy em, sell em and fuck off, they've been headlines for kin weeks now, and enough is enough.

Spurs don't want to sell Kane though and I'm not sure he even wants to go.

Rice was a done deal months ago.

Yep, been to plenty of bars in plenty of cities in plenty of states, I've never ever seen it done per drink.

I hate tipping on principle because a lot of jobs here that allow it also allow for paying their tippable employees well below minimum wage. And that's without even getting into how piss poor minimum wage is in terms of livability in most states.

I'd rather we didn't have it and the folks were just paid fair. Alas, a pipedream.

When I’ve worked in pubs I would tend to buy myself a half of something I was offered “and one for yourself” and keep it for later on.

Most good bar staff in a pub with regulars can get 2-3 pints for themselves by the end of the night

It used to be a half (bitter, mild, lager) and back in the day it wasn't frowned upon for barstaff to drink alcohol whilst working. In the 80s the IR then classed it as declarable and it went against your personal tax liability.

Xmas used to manic working behind the bar so we would just take a cash tip (back then it would have been 10p!!). I remember taking nearly as much home in tips for 2 hours work on Xmas lunch than I would for a whole day's work!!

I worked in pubs last year in Nottinfham and you could drink behind the bar whilst working. Just not to the point where you could no longer work 😂 I used to drink more than I earned some hours though which wasn’t helpful.

Shitty pub in Bermondsey tonight. Pint of Pravha £7.50.

Barman waves the scanner thing at you and you tap and wander off to find a seat.

Sit down and get a notification on your phone of £8.62 spent.

Jesus Christ, 15% tip added.

Ok I’ll take the rap of full responsibility for not checking what I was tapping for but that’s fucking outrageous. It’s tantamount to a scam. The guy deliberately offered the machine up in a way that hid the screen and amount too.

Getting really pissed off with the ugly side of this tipping mullarkey.

Bloody hell mate £7.50 a pint is bad enough but adding 15% for a tip is taking liberties

Had no idea it was £7.50 in the first place.

Was thinking about that - do pubs even display prices anymore? I mean it’s probably the only place you go where you buy something and generally have absolutely no idea what cost is.

Anyone know if you could reject a drink at the point of payment if you’re not happy? The thing is out of the barrel at that point and can’t exactly go back in.

All seems a very odd way of doing business but never really questioned it before.

Not only should pubs display their prices at the point of sale, they must also make it clear if there is a compulsory service charge.
If you are not informed of the price before ordering then you have the right to refuse to pay if the price charged is excessively more than you would have reasonably expected to pay.

I always made sure the screen was pointing towards the customer when offering them the card machine, I would be very wary of anyone offering it in a way that hides the screen.

Out of curiosity, why would you have a different take and leave the tips on for a Disney cruise?
It’s only a four night cruise so I can probably actually afford to keep the tips on this time. Plus, from my previous experience of Disney holidays, their staff always seem to go above and beyond so I’d feel a bit bad going to guest services and requesting to have the tips removed!

Many years ago when I was in New York you would buy 3 or so beers and tip the bartender, when you ordered the 4th you wouldn't be charged the bartender was "buying you one back" (Don't know how they managed to keep track when the place was packed), even with that found whole process annoying.
