New Laptop Required

the "making things more difficult" bit was referring to forcing outdated OS's on yourself down the line due to some problems that are simply solved. I understand you're not on it now.

but you're right in that the conversation is done, I just wish you'd acted a bit more of a prick about it.

Mate, there’s only one prick in here and that’s Mark. You just don’t have the ability to read and comprehend.

I don’t need to disable anything in the BIOS, and things run as smooth as silk. I’ve got a £3k rig that I maintain religiously. The problem is Windows 10. Ultimately I’ll have to use it but I’ll go to 8.1 with Start8 first and delay it as long as possible.

Sorry, just read back through this post and realised what a MASSIVE prick I was.

Trev, spec is below just in case you're interested. Only real downside is no SSD (they were mega expensive at the time) but the HDD in it works fine if you're not in a mental rush. I think the remainder of the labour warranty can be transferred as well, I ordered it January 2018 so there's around 17 months left on it.

I bought it for Cass for her birthday to do her schoolwork and projects on but she still uses my desktop so it just doesn't get used but it would be ideal for Uni work. It will need a lot of updating as I haven't updated it for months, maybe over a year. Anyhow, here it is. No worries if you're not interested.

Bought an absolute beauty today. Acer Nitro 5. It's lovely.

A lot of money but it's for spending, not counting.

Anyone bought a laptop recently?

I am torn between trying to get a normal laptop with either the latest Ryzen Cezanne processor (think they may be a myth at the moment, so probably end up being a 4700u Renoir or maybe even the i5 or i7 Lucienne as there's a few laptops out with those in. Am aware the Lucienne isn't much different to the Renoir btw) or the latest 11th gen Intel (most likely the i7 1165G7) with NO graphics card i.e not a gaming laptop

Or

A cheap gaming laptop with graphics card (would probably be a Renoir H or same 11th gen Intel processor)

Budget up to 800

Only for light gaming (mostly Runelite - apparently runs mainly off CPU and off a single core)

Do gaming laptops all have shit battery life even when not being pushed to their limit??

Do I just go for the first option as the built-in GPUs are meant to be good on the very latest Intel and AMD CPUs??

Are non-gaming laptops meant to be used for light gaming, will they just end up red hot??

Rabbit hole...

Don’t really see the point in gaming laptops - they are that big and hot they don’t move, may as well just get a proper PC and a cheapo laptop (chrome book or even a 2in1).

Gonna hijack this thread..

been told to buy my own laptop and expense it by my new work, got 2000 usd to spend (so about £1.5k). Bit random but I’m going with it.

What do people reckon? Bit of a loss as there’s too much choice - initially thought a surface pro, but not sure I could get by without a proper laptop.

All suggestions gratefully received (escpailly those which do Quidco :) )

What are you after? My Acer only cost me £700 in 2019 and it still plays AAA games on high quality.

Often you're paying for useless RAM in a dickswinging exercise, but I guess if it's not your money...

Thin, light, good screen, reliable and long battery are what I’m after.

Battery I can't help you with, I've treated laptops as desktops for 20 odd years. It's always on because of the nature of what I do, in and out of work.

How does that look? I've had a couple of Dells, not bad at all. HP can be flaky, some great, some a pain in the arse.

See I spent an extra £200 or so on 32GB RAM rather than 16GB when I bought an HP in 2015 (to be fair, it did a good job). Thinking it would future proof it.

Top of range thing there in 2022, still 16GB. Stay away from that wormhole.

For that budget I’d get one built by a specialist store. Fuck getting a Dell, Acer, whatever loaded up with bloatware. If it ain’t your money buy a daddy machine.
This requires dealing with someone who spends weekends in Games Workshop and smells of glue invariably, so be aware.

You don't really get bloatware these days as such (and if you do, you can easily fuck it off in half an afternoon. In fact pay me and I'll do it for you).

Presume you need to stay on Windows?

I don't like Microsoft but anyone pretending any other OS is better is just lying to themselves.
