New Laptop Required

Any reason you're resisting moving to 10, Booz?

I tested it from day one as a Windows Insider and while it improved over the 18 months or so I ran it in a dual boot (after running it in a virtual machine) I just didn’t like the lack of control I had over driver installation. That was probably my main reason, I’m also not particularly struck on the idea of an ever evolving OS but at some point I’ll just have to do it.

Gah, guess I'll have to update at some point then.

Yeah I'm sure it is. I just hate change :D

Windows 10 is great once you get used to it.

Let me know how to stop it auto installing the audio drivers for a GTX980 Classified which conflict with the Realtek audio drivers and I might start agreeing. Also how to keep network drives mapped during major update rollouts instead of having to remap them every time. I can’t remember the other issues off the top of my head but I don’t expect to have to manage an operating system on a regular basis, it’s a massive ballache.

Some laptop recommendations needed from you über geeks please.

My wife is after a laptop for her Uni course next year. Her whole course is online so she will need to be able to do her assignments on it, download and watch lectures and recorded herself doing presentations and use power point etc.

Would a chromebook do all that or does she need an actual proper laptop. Any recommendations? All answers need to be in child friendly form as I am probably only a couple levels up from Paddy with my understanding of technology.

dealing with 3rd party materials and having to do recordings and whatnot... guessing a chromebook not gonna be what you want, or at least might be more hassle than is worth

chromebooks you're stuck with whatever the native OS and google apps support. you can't install anything or do normal OS filesystem type things. it's not a "real" OS, it's meant for cloud file sharing and browsing the internet, very light stuff.

anything more specific the other guys can chime in. dunno what you guys have over there and "what laptop" is a bit vague without knowing size, pricerange, preferences (battery life, good screen, full keyboard, etc.).

edit -- chromebooks are also basically laptop recording devices so avoiding them for that reason alone is worth it IMNSFHO.

What's your budget mate?

You can use Linux on Chromebooks now, but it's a faff and definitely not for the less technical competent..

I could never get on with on it, I ran a few versions in virtual machines and it just never appealed to me. It's not something I'd recommend messing with to save a few quid on a laptop personally. If you're very PC savvy though like you say it's probably worth a go.

With a chromebook you need to make sure you get one that's compatible with the MS office suite, it's likely to be but worth a check otherwise you'd be limited to the cloud version of office, which is pretty lightweight.

Also, chromebooks are designed to be used whilst connected to the Internet. Again, unlikely to be an issue but worth consideration.

Ultimately, if the course requires any specialist software installing then a chromebook would be a bad idea. My degree with the Open University wasn't purely online but I did have to install some specialist software.

Agreed, unless your only requirement is internet and Google docs Chromebooks are best avoided (I do have one, but it's mian use is internet or RDPing onto a different windows machine).

On Linux, it can be worth persevering with - I quite like using the terminal and SSH is great.

To be fair when I tried it I was at the height of analysing BSODs so I was only really dabbling with it. It took me nearly a month to set a 1920 x 1080 screen resolution which really put me off. Once I’d done it I just couldn’t be bothered to mess any more so deleted the machine. I’ve still got the ISOs so may well set up another machine at some point.

I need to upgrade my Windows first though, I’ve clung onto 7 for as long as I can but it’s time to move on. I just hate clean installing and re-installing all of my programs, it takes ages.

Ok. We'll forget about the Chromebooks.

Looking for a laptop then for writing assignments, watching videos of lectures, recording presentations using power point etc.

Not sure on the budget. She is using some of her student loan to buy it with but not sure how much she'll have yet. She wants one that will last but the cheapest one that fits the bill probably.

Right, but if someone is asking for help picking a laptop, throwing linux on them aint gonna be the move.

windows 10 is fine. people bitch just to bitch. these are the same people that hated XP and then 7 when they came out, and now whine how they don't want to move off them. happens every single release.

Been very happy with W10, best release since XP (which ended up being the cockroach of OSs, just would not be killed off :) )

Most of the complaints seem to be from tinfoil hatted loons who think Microsoft are relentlessly stealing all your personal data (as well as your soul, probably) every time you turn your PC on, maaaaan.
