New Laptop Required

Windows 10 is great. Nowt wrong with it.

Being super user-friendly isn't what the majority of people want. It's simple enough for 90% of the general user.

Been very happy with W10, best release since XP (which ended up being the cockroach of OSs, just would not be killed off :) )

Most of the complaints seem to be from tinfoil hatted loons who think Microsoft are relentlessly stealing all your personal data (as well as your soul, probably) every time you turn your PC on, maaaaan.

to be fair there is a lot of data tracking baked into 10, but there are lots of guides out there on turning things off if someone were so inclined

Meh, it's unavoidable these days. If I threw out every single piece of electronic equipment I own, I might be safe from The Man. Oh, and if I never left the house and never spent any money...

I did that one Sunday. Just went through about 30 options and turned them all off.

Chromebook wont be suitable unless she is just looking to browse, so avoid as you have said.

My wife wants a laptop for her birthday this weekend, and PC World/Currys are doing Lenovo thinkpads for €230. W10 installed and Intel Celeron processor.

Will snap that up, great price for a machines that will only be used for emails, browsing and photo editing.

Nowt wrong with it my arse. You tell me how to stop it downloading Realtek audio drivers automatically, I don’t want or need them as I use audio through my GPU which already has the drivers installed. They then conflict. Load of bollocks.

I beta tested 10 from day one to official release and hated it. Still do.

I've never had that problem, and I use a different sound card.

I had it every single day. I don’t have a different soundcard, I use my GPU through HDMI for my sound, 10 is too stupid to realise that GPU sound doesn’t automatically disable onboard sound so keeps downloading the driver for it.

Just disable the playback device in sounds or device manager.

Just buy any half decent laptop T-Dan. Doesn't sound like anything it won't handle.

/peasant advice

If you set anything else as the default, surely it doesn't matter if the machine downloads the drivers?

Audio drivers will conflict and can cause BSODs as well as other irritating glitches.

disable audio in the BIOS, the OS won't even see it. you can go ahead disable anything else you don't need while you're in there too, just to help things running smoothly.

I don’t need to disable anything in the BIOS, and things run as smooth as silk. I’ve got a £3k rig that I maintain religiously. The problem is Windows 10. Ultimately I’ll have to use it but I’ll go to 8.1 with Start8 first and delay it as long as possible.

Tried it, multiple times.

OK.

Sorry I suggested anything, you've got it under control.

Not sure what you didn't understand. As things stand with Windows 7 I don't need to disable anything in the BIOS, things work as they should. With Windows 10 they won't. I don't use Windows 10 and will use Windows 8 when I have to. I was just again proving the point that there are issues with Windows 10, not my problem if you can't read a post for what it is.

If not performing a simple setting change is worth making things difficult for the sake of it, by all means. Not sure why you would leave things enabled that you actively don't want being used, regardless of this specific conversation...

again, I'm sorry for answering.
