Melbourne looks like ‘Pyongyang by the Yarra’

As of today, Saturday morning, this the list of current restrictions Metropolitan Melbourne is living under...

- We cannot go more than 5km from our homes
- We can exercise outside our homes for a maximum of 2 hours per day
- We can only leave our homes for one of five reasons; to buy food, to give care, to seek medical care, to go to work, to exercise
- We must work from home if we are not an essential worker
- We must carry a permit to go more than 5km’s from our homes and risk heavy fines for not having a permit
- We cannot congregate in large groups
- Not all of our children are allowed to go to school
- Children’s sport and all other sport has been cancelled for the foreseeable future
- Our businesses/cafes/restaurants/pubs are closed and there are heavy fines if opened
- Australian citizens travelling to Europe do not need to quarantine for two weeks as Australia is deemed low risk by the WHO.

Yesterday, Victoria had TWO new confirmed cases of Covid-19... and this morning it is ONE ! ! !

So we are running at 1-2 cases per 5.5 million - or 0.03 cases per 100,000.

Tomorrow the Premier is to announce some easing of restrictions - highly unlikely businesses/cafes/restaurants/pubs will be allowed to open under any condition.

Well not much changed today:

- You cannot go more than than 25km from your home (previously 5km)
- We can only leave our homes for one of five reasons; to buy food, to give care, to seek medical care, to go to work, to exercise.
- Time for exercise is unlimited.
- We must still work from home if we are not an essential worker
- We must carry a permit to go more than 25km’s from our homes and risk heavy fines for not having a permit
- We cannot congregate in large groups
- Still not all of our children are allowed to go to school
- Our businesses/cafes/restaurants/pubs are still closed and there are heavy fines if opened - a number now are opening and running the risk.

Today only 2 new confirmed cases - that's 8 in total for the last 4 days.

We are still running at 1-2 cases per 5.5 million - or 0.03 cases per 100,000.

The Premier says we will have to wait until next month (November) before there may be some easing of restrictions - i.e. we've been locked up since early July !

I have never seen such widespread anger and hate in all my life towards towards a politician - ie the Premier, Dan "Fucking" Andrews.

Well last night I finally saw my eldest daughter for the first time since mid-March . . . pretty emotional and lots of hugs !

We had to meet in the park across the road from where I live (had an evening picnic) as no-one from outside your household is allowed into your home.

Well today's announcement for easing of restrictions as Melbourne had reached the target set by the Premier and his Chief Health Officer (5 cases of less average over 14 days in a city of 5.5 million) which was 4.8 today . . . drum roll . . . nope he's still not sure so no change for the foreseeable future.

FFS ! ! !

In UK speak that's well less than 0.1 per 100,000 ! ! !

There's less than 10 people in hospital with it but none are in ICUs or require ventilators.

We have been in hard lockdown since early July (ie something similar to what is proposed for Wales) i.e. nearly 4 months.

Just reading about "Scomo". He sounds like a nice chap. Sending refugees and families off to a prison island.

Scomo (Scott Morison) is Australia's PM - Daniel Andrews is the Premier of Victoria and the one responsible for the clusterfuck in Melbourne/Victoria.

Does the Premier of Victoria have to be elected? He sounds like he doesn't want the job anymore

He's cactus and yes we have the next Victorian state election in just over 2 years time.

It would be a long story to go through all the shenanigans that's been going on in this state for the past few years; but he's seriously in trouble where he's likely to face manslaughter charges (refer to previous posts on the hotel quarantine fiasco).

The good news is the the hard lockdown will start to be lifted on Wednesday ! ! ! ie after 111 fucking days ! ! !

The blowback from yesterday's announcements was immense - the community, business and the Federal Govt all condemned him mercilessly.

Today there were ZERO new cases which gives us a 2 week average of 0.06 per 100,000 - I kid you not. You would kill, pardon the expression, for numbers like that in the UK.

From 11:59pm on Tuesday, retail will reopen in Melbourne, as will restaurants, hotels, cafes and bars will reopen as well with limits of 20 people indoors, including 10 people per space, and 50 people outdoors with one person per two square metres.

Beauty, personal services and tattooing will reopen, provided masks are worn.

Outdoor gatherings will remain at a maximum of 10 people, infants under 12 months are not included in the calculation of 10, and gatherings will no longer be limited to just two households.

Weddings will increase to a maximum of 10 people. Funerals will increase to a maximum of 20 mourners.

Religious gatherings will now be able to have a maximum of 10 people indoors and 20 outdoors.

However, the 25km travel limit will remain in place for at least another 10 days.

It's the first stage of getting some semblance of our lives back, although the social and economic devastation that has been dealt to Melbourne/Victoria is and will be horrific.

It's certainly dampened my interest/enthusiasm for Wolves, as in the whole scheme of things it just isn't the same.

Still life, hopefully, can go on.

I understand your frustration but it all looks like a better plan than over here where it feels like we are on the verge of losing control of it....hope I'm wrong

It's still a bit messy but I certainly concede, from afar, it looks like a total clusterfuck over in the UK - here in Oz it was pretty well limited to Melbourne/Victoria.

To give you an idea of how out of kilter Melbourne/Victoria was refer to the table below:

this post pre-supposes we ever were in control of it...

bbc view on aus lockdown

guess this is the dichotomy isn't it. WmO has explained the impact of the lockdown in Aus. However it has had benefits, it means avoidable deaths have been prevented, health systems have not been overwhelmed. Compared to us where the ONS informs us deaths are over 60k now, and rising as we enter the 2nd peak.

read an article yesterday that said 3 in 4 around the world are unhappy with how their government has managed the pandemic.
