Perhaps the root of this is that, although the purpose of the protest has shifted from initially supporting BLM to encompass a much wider agenda, the gesture used remains the one that, rightly or wrongly, is inextricably associated in the popular mindset with BLM alone. The knee represents an uncomfortable truth. Kick It Out etc does well for kids who are in grounds early seeing the t-shirts and absorbing that message, your average mouth breathing racist football fan is in Wetherspoons till 2.45 and gets to the ground once those t-shirts and messaging are off.

They hark on about keeping politics out of football and Kick It Out was better because it was something that they could ignore. The knee is right there, in their faces and they hate it.
