Loan Watch 2022/2023

We are much higher line as an average. Even times against City we were. From the NB you could see (and can see generally) how tight the distance between front to back was. Under Nuno default position with the ball on the halfway line was just outside the penalty area and we’d pretty much allow teams into our half/third without engaging at all.

As for Coady, he cannot play in “our” four. For one there’s the higher line element where a simple ball into the channel is a massive threat with him in the team, particularly the amount of times RAN and Jonny have been caught ahead of the ball. There’s also the element that we are a small team, only having one aerially dominant player in the entire XI would be a massive issue. Then there is all the issue’s DW lists, which I’m not sure anyone who has watched him for any sustained period can diagree with?

That’s not to say he can’t play in anyones 4. The most important attribute for a CB is postioning. Stand in roughly the right place and your making your life much easier and can cover you limitations. See Tyrone Mings on what happens if you stand in the wrong place and have to rely on pace and last ditch stuff to cover your deficiencies. Coady is actually decent positionally, concentrates and will put his body on the line and head where it hurts. Play him in a deep counter attacking team with full back support and he will be ok.

The Arsenal game Raul got injured is a classic example of how Coady can do that role. We sat deep where his pace couldn’t be exposed and the FBs never went too far away. They had no one particularly physical to go up against him and are always going to be more of a ball playing team anyway. This suits him to a T. He can then use his ability on the ball to pick out a ball to start a counter, like he did for Adama.

So he can play in a 4. Is he good enough to play for a top half team who want to play higher and control the game, absolutely not. Could he have shut down Mitrovic like we did? No. We played high right up against him knowing we’d not get beaten behind and would win the aerial duel and if we didn’t win it influence it enough to prevent a clean pass/possession. With Coady in there our plan would have had to change or risk them having a lot more joy than they did.

Nice bloke but he couldn’t play in a 4 the way the current manager wants to play.

A quick update from the weekend:

Nigel Lonwijk - Plymouth (League One)

A full game for Lonners as they beat Ipswich 2-1 to leapfrog them and go top of the table.

Lewis Richards - Harrogate (League Two)

Full game in a 1-0 defeat at Stevenage. Was lucky not to concede an own goal after a deflected shot bounced off him but then he was caught out at the far post for the winner.

Louie Moulden - Solihull Moors (National League)

Played in a 2-0 defeat at Woking. Not much he could do about the goals and made a fine fingertip save to keep the damage down.

Joe Young - Dartford (National Leag)ue South)

Won 2-1 at home. Young was unlucky not to get his first home clean sheet of the season after a late deflection looped over his head into the top corner. Made some fine saves before that, though.

Not in squad: Marques (international duty with Portugal U20s), O'Shaughnessy
No game: Everyone else.

Good loans for Lonwijk and Marques so far I think. Be really interesting if they can kick on from here. I still have high hopes for Marquee in particular

Coads can’t stop scoring!

From the weekend.

Dion Sanderson - Birmingham (Championship)

Played the full game in a 1-1 draw at Bramall Lane.

Luke Cundle - Swansea (Championship)

Made his full debut at the Toilet Bowl, but only played an hour. Oh, and Swansea came back from 2-1 down to win it.

Theo Corbeanu - Blackpool (Championship)

Played 84 minutes in a 1-0 defeat at home to Norwich. Had an early chance hit the post. Switched flanks as the game went on but with no luck.

Christian Marques - Forest Green (League One)

Played a full game as FGR threw away a 2-1 lead to lose 3-2 - especially bad as it was against 10 men.

Nigel Lonwijk - Plymouth Argyle (League One)

Argyle’s good run with Lonwijk in the side continues, another full game for him in a 1-0 win at Wycombe.

Fabio Silva - Anderlecht (Belgian Premier)

Played a full game in a 1-0 defeat at home to Charleroi. That’s four league defeats in six now for Anderlecht.

Leo Campana - Inter Miami (MLS)

Played 70 minutes of Miami’s 1-0 win at Toronto. Made one half-chance for himself which he put wide, but was subbed off just after.

Bendeguz Bolla and Hayao Kawabe - Grasshoppers Zurich (Swiss Super League)

A full game and all-action display from Bolla, who whipped in a great cross for a disallowed goal, fired a long-range shot wide, then later slid in to prevent a goal. He even appeared on the left-hand side and scored a decent goal.

Kawabe also played 75 minutes.

Goal on 2:20

Louie Moulden - Solihull Moors (National League)

Played in a 2-2 draw at home to Bromley. Got caught off his line for the first, then flapped at the second as Solihull went two down. They came back to draw level after a Bromley red card.

Joe Young - Dartford (National League South)

Played in a 2-0 home win as Dartford go third.

On as sub: Giles came on after 55 minutes in a 1-0 defeat at Coventry and almost set up a goal with a wicked cross that his team mate couldn’t quite connect with. Taylor Perry came on in stoppage time in a 2-0 win.

Unused subs: Richards, Hoever, Sang-Bin, Arinbjornsson
Not in squad: O’Shaughnessy, Jordao.

The Times say Everton are going to trigger the Coady buy out which is under £10m

Is that in addition to a loan fee?
It doesn't say, but doubt it would be reported that way as it was an option. More likely the option is under £10m and the loan fee only kicks in (assuming there was one) if they choose not to take it up

£10m suggests Lage wanted him out and he wanted to go. Ridiculous fee for an England international even with his known limitations.

I think £15m would have been fair for all parties, so we should have got that.

We couldn’t really get above that value for a player we didn’t want and wanted to leave. But don’t know why we’d get less than that when they clearly had money as they were in for Donck? and MGW.
