I know it's the crappy defence that people throw out in favour of Sa when he does something stupid, but the current standard of PL goalkeeping is not very high. How has Verbruggen let that in?

Yep, goalkeeping is really poor.

It is obvious but it comes from the modern expectation of wanting goalkeepers to be excellent ball players, but also capable of being agile shot stoppers, physically strong coming for corners, and fast off their line. All 4 things together are difficult for the human form.

A good point - much like CHs used to be “stoppers” and weren’t expected to be good on the ball. I guess simple physics explains why agility and coordination are generally better in shorter people. Not many 6’ 3” gymnasts!
