Live Match Discussion 2022/23

Brandt and Malen are such infuriating players. Loads of ability but match by match you haven't got a clue what you're going to get.

What was with Brandt stopping his run a few minutes ago? Just watched the ball dribble past him about 15 yards out. Thought for absolute certain he'd be lashing at it and tearing the net off. Instead it was like he played a dummy... to the defender.

Got to hand it to Mainz in terms of sporting integrity. Defending as if survival depends upon it, yet it's a nothing game for them.

Nothing quite like the sound of a crowd reacting to a goal somewhere else.

Fucking love football. There's nothing that comes close at this stage of the season
This 😂

Fuck I remember when City first won the league under Mancini, I was on honeymoon (or at least a kid free romantic holiday) and we were out for a walk. I'd been following the beeb live text and we left at half time, and when we got back I just read it all from that point after refreshing. Even 'living' it that way was insanely exciting, even though it was 7pm I had no idea what had happened, it was like I was reading an impossible to believe script.

Football, eh

Utter shit from Koln tbh. Entire passage of play was down to the Koln player trying to run directly through a Bayern player instead of just passing it to his left.

Terrific goal from Musiala though.

Al, do you think a final day like this is more dramatic than say a super bowl? Gotta be for me. In the nfl it all obviously leads up to that as a defining moment, but in football it's pretty rare in any one league I think. In the PL we had it in that Mancini year and then in the United vs West Ham/Blackburn vs Liverpool year, and God knows when before that. Obviously we had it in the Wrexham/County sitch this year too. Always seems like on that last day, the title seems to switch hands as well, it's never just a routine 'the two teams at the top both win comfortably' situation. Fucking ridonk

Sport is fucking brutal, man.

God, you kidding? Give me this type of shit every day of the week.

I haven't watched a live Bundesliga match in something like 3 years and I was still absolutely enthralled by that.

The last day of the regular season would be the closest comparison NFL wise. They make the mistake of not scheduling games at the same time though

United's treble year went right to the end and they were 1-0 down to Spurs for a while.

There was a lengthy period last season where if Liverpool had got their act together against us (us! under Lage! We're no good) they'd have been top in real time. However I think by the time they went in front City had got their act together against Villa from 0-2 down.

@Del Woppio

Since you asked about Final Day drama, it reminds me that I really landed on Wolves as my club precisely because of the emotions surrounding it. It was Stephen Hunt's goal against Blackburn and the subsequent reaction in the stands (me: "why's everyone going so nuts? They're still losing?") that really sold me.

I've probably told that story before but not really pieced together the Final Day spice.

Luton lost their captain in a freak off the ball incident 10 minutes in. Luton looking more likely to score though, probably not surprisingly from set pieces.

Fuck man, honestly that was the most shattering, exhausting experience of my life. It's impossible to put that experience into words. In terms of the emotional explosion, it's even above the play off final for me, it was off the scale.*

I was on friendly, texting terms with Matt Grayson who was comms director at the time. Morgan said to him "what do we need to do to make sure we don't got through that again", and still ended up fucking it up.

*i know there's often a bit of stuff between the ST vs IPTV crowds. I don't buy into the thought that 'it' means more to one than the other, or even that the live perspective on the game is more valuable than the TV one. But the isolated experience, that emotional roller coaster of a 90 minutes, or in some cases a whole season coming down to that 90 minutes...or even that 10 minutes at the end. Sheesh. Like if we said that next season wolves were to win the FA Cup. We'd all be fucking delighted, ecstatic, euphoric. Whether it was sat with a couple of mates, or a big old event at somebody's house or whatever. But if you were at your mates house with your ten best mates in the world, you'd still swap it for being at Wembley even on your own for a day like that.

Not even sure what I'm saying there tbh, but there we go. I think it basically comes down to the massively controversial take of "being live at the event of a football match of massive and lasting significance is better than not being there", which doesn't feel particularly worth typing, but then no matter how good your writing you can't quite capture it anyway
