Live Match Discussion: 2020/21

The first time i've watched City and thought they look like they need a number 9

I think that's a fair comment though. Jesus is good, but he isn't near yet to what a peak or fit Aguerro offers you in a game like that, and in a game like that they did look like they would have benefited from someone engaging and committing the defenders with runs and sharper movement as a focal point.

Assist from Matt Doherty, his fifth this season. 3 prem 2 el.

Semedo has 1.

From less combined appearances too. But shhhhhhh 😉 we only mention him when he has a bad game

Take a look at the comments from Spurs fans yesterday. Safe to say he did not have a good game

I think point scoring for a 4 yard square pass under no pressure to a player in the open who then scores a goal of the season contender actually devalues the discussion.

I think we sold Doherty too cheaply and said so at the time, I also think some of the revelling in his struggles when we all know he has a very narrow role that is PL standard have been unsavoury I also believe there's been some reinventing of history as to how much he limited us, but are people now pivoting to we shouldn"t have sold him?

If that is the case or whether it's just an anti Semedo comment using assists to demonstrate Doherty as the superior player it's flawed either way. If it's selling him in the first place, then apologies if I'm wrong, but i don't remember much concern about the concept at the time, value yes, but not the principle

If Doherty had stayed he probably would have been more effective on the offensive stat sheet, but equally he wouldn't have been in the Top 10 in the PL for tackles won. That demonstrates that although they nominally play the same position their roles are very different and therefore can't be judged by like for like statistics. I see a lot that Semedo is a massive upgrade, based on this season i think massive is doing a lot of heavy lifting in that statement, but equally for all the reasons discussed ad infinitum we aren't playing the way Nuno envisaged when he signed him.

I can't speak for Cyber on this one, but I'm pretty sure like me it's just a bit of gentle ribbing and balancing out the perspectives you highlight in your second paragraph.

I don't think anyone wants him back, and Spurs are daft playing him in a back four, but imo Semedo has improved since his arrival but it's very premature (as you say) to be talking about a massive upgrade.

Hoping for that from Nelson next season

Personally I think the jury is still a bit out on Semedo, obviously he's a far better all round player and a better athlete than Doc. His defending has improved since he got here imo, but in an attacking sense I want more, too often takes the low risk option such as the pass by Doc yesterday for his 'assist' just occasionally I'd like him to go past a defender and cross/pull back, also like him to drive into the box more often, he actually did that sometimes earlier this season but seems to have stopped in recent games.

No guarantees on Doherty this season, Coady, Rui, Boly, Dendoncker have all had drop offs in form so its not inconceivable he'd have been as poor as Somedo defensively (at points) with the same output as Somedo at the other end.

The problem with Doc, is that we haven't replaced what he brought to the table - somebody that moved from deep/outside, and beelined for the penalty box. Somebody that passed, and then moved into a dangerous position, and looked to trouble the spaces between defenders. Yeah, he was limited, but he worked. For all the cost and pedigree of Semedo, I've never thought he's looked better than a good, functional full back - certainly not a world renowned, £30m massive upgrade on what he replaced. Yeah he's getting better, but all that actually means is that he's stopped looking absolutely shit, which he did for the first few months of the season. It'd be very difficult to argue that it's a switch that's benefited us at this stage, really.

I agree to an extent, but knowing the system and role and having pre-existing partnerships with players in the team, combined with his stats for the previous two seasons, mean I imagine he'd still have more than one assist from 25 games (he already has more than that playing poorly at FB for Spurs from 14 games).

It's a bit of coincidence that Doherty's form has coincided with Bales

Anyway, good to see him showing some of his talents rather than being battered every week.

Cancelo looked bobbins for the first 6 months of his City career, now he's not far off PotS.

I think Nuno's plan was to play Adama and Semedo as overlapping one another but that doesn't work as Adama is almost impossible to play with, as Doc himself found out.

In the wider point about goals, Doc was undoubtedly a threat at set plays, a good header of the ball and liked a pop at goal, couple that with the loss of Jota and Raul and it is clear we have not replaced any of their input.

That's piss poor recruitment.

was highlighting that while he got plenty of stick defensively he was invaluable to our counter attacking strategy and contributed both goals and assists which are currently absent from his replacement. Add to that no Raul and no Jota and you can easily see why we don’t score much. Jota also would run at defenders like Neto but further up the pitch. We are playing 30 yards deeper this season I think. I don’t want Doc back but was putting balance
