Live Match Discussion 2018/19

Yeah. He's maybe turned more than most would be how many times do you see a defender turn away from the shot and it hit them. It happens numerous times a game.

It does happen and it’s strange. I remember playing when I was a kid in the cold and wet, you weren’t particular warm one would smash off your thigh, it was horrendous. But as an adult, when your more warmer (in the same weather, but it’s more serious, you run around more etc), adrenaline pumping, it doesn’t really bother you. Now at the top level those factors should be x1000.

Now I know rugby is totally different. But look at the people charging down a kick. They get smashed by a pointy ball, stay on their feet and carry on and score a try.

Yeah, dreadful decision. Human nature means you turn away to varying degrees but most do turn away. I've just watched the Kimpembe one again and if you slow it right down his arm isn't even away from his body. Rio said it perfectly after the game and better than i can on here, his arm is exactly where it should be when blocking the ball as he is and there's no law that says he can't block the ball like that. It's great for Utd and possibly us and PSg deserved to lose because they didn't do enough for me but still shouldn't have been a pen and never should be imo.

I think I agree on balance (didn't hear Rio as I went straight over to the Porto game).

But they do get given from time to time, they shouldn't in my book but what I would say is that tonight's isn't one that you've never seen before, how on earth has he given that, this is totally wrong...

I think if he's front on then he can see where the ball's going and probably gets his arm out of the way, so it's his own fault for being a fanny in that respect.

Roma have been shocking this season so exiting at this stage is absolutely fair to them.

Eusebio di Francesco won't survive this. He's been utterly found out.

Did anybody see the Dzeko/Pepe shenanigans?

Shame he wasn't booked for going head to head with the great shithouse and then another for the appalling play acting afterwards.

Man Utd got incredibly lucky last night, no chance they will win it - they will be done over in the next round if they get a tough draw.

Yeah, so embarrasing and pathetic. What on earth was he playing at

Can't be giving penalties for that. His arm isn't out in an unnatural position and it's just hit him. See ball to hand like that all the time in various areas of the pitch that aren't given.

After seeing the replay and then the ref looking at VAR I was convinced it wasn't going to be given.

I have a different view on this. Having been a referee, on first view at full speed, I didn't even contemplate that it would be given as a penalty.
However, if you watch it slowed down the player knows exactly what he's doing. He keeps watching the ball then jumps and turns his back while making himself bigger with where he places his arm and elbow. As soon as I saw that, and the referee heading to the VAR screen, I had every expectation that a penalty would be given. It's just the way things are now, slow the action down and the offence will always look much worse than it actually is

Agree with this.

When the ball is struck like that and you go to block it, ideally you wouldn't be turning away but it's human nature to do so sometimes and involuntary to protect the front - his arm and elbow aren't in an unnatural position - they're very slightly away from the body but unless jumping up like you are about to do a pencil dive I don't know what else he can do.

I am not 100% on what the wording is on the rules but this should not be a penalty - there are plenty of examples of others like this that get interpreted as ball to hand - it looks worse in slow motion but in real time he didn't have time to stop and think about turning his back and making himself a bigger target with the arm - it was a natural attempt to block the shot,

Agree with this.

Agree with your agreement. I was entirely unsurprised when the ref gave it after VAR and very surprised indeed that so many people here disagreed, not to mention BT's pundits. Interestingly, BT's tame ref seemed to be in no doubt that the decision was correct. All about interpretation, I guess. Slo mo does change perception. The 'intentional' aspect isn't really helpful: how can anyone truly know what's in the player's mind? We get plenty of instances of fouls being called elsewhere on the pitch after tackles that are misjudged rather than cynical.

Going well for Arsenal in Rennes...

BTW - been past this stadium a few times over the years as I spent quite a bit of holiday time in deepest darkest Brittany. It looks fantastic from the outside. Would love to see us play there one day.

Oh dear Arsenal. Should have got out of dodge with the 2-1 defeat and an away goal. Now it might be pretty damn difficult to go through.

Mm. Could have done without that. Two goals are not unreasonable though

A shame we are now not playing them after the second leg as they’d obviously have to take it seriously (but we’ve got bigger fish to fry now..)
