LIVE! Match discussion 2014/15

Absolute dross from players and coach who'll have some very difficult questions to answer after another pile crap campaign 1 goal in 3 matches and England have looked way out there depth tonight.

A quick wiki see's all of the italians playing regularly in Serie A except Trotta. I know Serie A isnt too strong these days, but these players playing at the highest level will be better for them than English players in the Championship?

Serie A isn't loaded with European title challengers but I'm not sure it's correct to say it "isn't too strong".

Im not saying it is shit? Just saying it is not the strength is was 10 years ago

Just a distinct lack of real quality in midfield and the ability to unlock defences, 1 goal in 3 games says a lot.
Expect a similar tale next summer with the senior side when we go out to a side with some quality.
We are the biggest flat track bullies going easily beat crap sides in qualifying but are found wanting against a decent side.

Nah I do agree with that, I just think the league overall gets more stick than it deserves. Didn't mean to take it out on you personally.

It just comes down to what was being said on this thread the other day, we don't let our players play with any freedom and we limit what they are capable of because we are afraid of making errors.

There are two sides to the spectrum IMHO: playing with freedom and playing as a unit. Typically I subscribe to the latter more than the former, but England seems to not really be in either camp and it hasn't worked out very well.

I think the 4-4-2 can work if implemented and drilled well (very, very well).

Klopp and Simeone both broadly play 4-4-2 and it's not done them any harm.

I've been out this evening so didn't catch the game. Having watched Sunday's match I'm not overly surprised it's ended in tears. Southgate set the team up wrong for that one and it appears he just went and did exactly the same here with slightly different personnel. How Chalobah retained his place is beyond me - he was Olofinjana levels of bad against Sweden.

Klopp plays a 4-4-2? I thought he was a pretty strict 4-2-3-1 adherent.

Not really since Götze left and even then he'd frequently play him wide left and go two up top. Of course he did use Reus as a striker quite a lot which blurs the lines.

Well. Learn something each day.

Far, far too much emphasis is placed on formation anyway.

The more and more I think about it the more I think it is about the men we appoint at the top. How many in the current England set up create any type of inspiration/excitement?

If we are going to be shit lets at least do it in an entertaining way.

Ultimately we have the same manager and DoF that West Brom had four years ago. Which was absolutely great for West Brom and their realistic aspirations, but is it really enough for England? I like Hodgson on a personal level and we've played ok in patches since the World Cup, but do I see us seriously challenging to win Euro 2016, no. Southgate is a decent enough guy but being brutal about it - prior to this he had one managerial job, a fairly cushy job to land as well, Boro not really anywhere near relegation trouble when he took over - relegated them and got sacked.

It's incomprehensible that Aidy Boothroyd has a job in the national set up. I saw two of the U20 games that Iorfa/Hause played in and the style of football was non-existent.

I agree with both of you. It's a pity the media don't want to address this.

It looks like the ladies will have to carry the flag for our football aspirations this summer...

And this is largely why, and I'm Not sure you'll agree on this mind. I'd be in favour of the manager being someone like Rodgers. Not necessarily him but , He has shown he can develop players and least of all he would try to play in a fairly entertaining fashion, if a little naive. Plus he wouldn't be allowed to sign anyone so we take that out of the window too ha!

I'd just like to be entertained. As history shows us, We are generally a quarter final team (ish) which is our level. So it doesn't bother me as much that we lose its just how we do it!
