Sutcliffe was parked in a secluded road with a lady of the night (likely to be his next victim) when 2 Policemen happened to be passing and ran checks. The vehicle did have false plates and Sutcliffe was about to be taken in when he said he needed a wee. This was allowed. Later on one of the Policemen had some suspicions so returned to the scene to search the bushes and found a hammer, screwdriver and various kit. Sutcliffe himself was searched and found to be wearing a V-neck jumper upside down as a pair of leggings, allowing easy access to his tackle when he needed to masturbate over his victims.
