January Transfer Window, 25/26 Season

We don't particularly care about Stoke.

But in those 15 years I don't think we've played them in the league?

I went to Stoke away in the 90s and it was vile, similar to Leeds.

Then once in the 00s and it was similarly hairy.

Anyway that wasn't my point, I just think the games I mentioned will get in crowds of over 25k, assuming we are at least in the top 6.
Apologies, didn't mean it as a refutation. Thinking aloud, as it were.

Fwiw I've been following us seriously for 15 years now; I've never once heard of us particularly caring about Stoke, nor the other way around. But then, I don't think I've ever met a Stoke supporter.
Staffordshire Derby between the two biggest cities in the county, so yes, for people north of Wolverhampton it's a bit of a deal.

The two cities might be in the same county, but they're a relatively long way apart. It's pretty much the same distance away as Coventry or Burton Albion which literally no-one cares about; and Shrewsbury which only people from the far side of Telford care a little about.

The Clayheads are a bunch of shits. Their fans are vile. Their only saving grace is that the Port Vale animals are even worse.

Port Vale away in '89 is the most I've ever been worried about my safety. Not because of the other fans, although it did go off afterwards. I didn’t put my feet on the ground all game and in hindsight it was a couple of months before Hillsborough

My old boss is a Stoke fan and he absolutely HATES Wolves. Not helped by the fact he was born in Wolverhampton, grew up around Wolves fans and claims we are “unbearable”.

He’s a bit of a knob himself, hence the “ex” boss bit.

I grew up in Shropshire (Ludlow way) and weirdly most in that area disliked Blues more than Albion. Interesting how it differs from area to area.

Anyway, there’s a rumour that Palmeiras have offered us €25m for Arias with their window still open. I think we have to sell at that price, no?

Until 1974, Wolverhampton and Stoke were both in Staffordshire, so it was an intra county rivalry, one in the south, one in the north, and people in the middle were split (including the town of Stafford). That's why the rivalry is probably a generational thing.

In 1974, a new county was created to incorporate many large towns and cities in the West Midlands region, including Birmingham (historically in Warwickshire). Confusingly, they called the county "West Midlands", which is also the name of the region that it and the surrounding counties sit within. Wolverhampton is in the North West of the "new" county, meaning the focus became inwards (east and south, towards Birmingham) rather than outwards towards Stoke and Port Vale.

I grew up in the 80s and 90s and the rivalries were very much Albion and Blues. I didn't even know where Stoke was.

Port Vale away was a pretty lively one as a kid from recollection, but that's in no small part down to the fact it is in hands down one of the roughest places ever to exist

Wow. £25m for Arias might even top the JSL windfall.

Other teams obviously watch our players in a completely different way.
