Ryan Mason is very much the exception. Very few players are forced to retire through this kind of injury and it isn't that uncommon.
With any luck he won't remember a thing about itI do hope and pray that Raul has a full recovery. He's a wonderful character who has given Wolves and Mexico a tremendous stimulus in how he plays and the goals he scores and makes. When he is on song, the football is fascinating to watch. I feel for him greatly.
Having had a serious head injury when I nearly died in 2019, I realize that he will experience considerable trauma. Medics can address the head injury surgically but the trauma survives. It will take him some time before he is ready to play football again. However, he's 50 years younger than me, so he'll probably make it. But we must give him time to heal physically and mentally. Life is more important than football and I wish him well because he has experienced a most unfortunate and serious set-back.
He may not remember much but he will feel it for a long time. I have to assume you've never had a serious accident like this, otherwise you wouldn't be so dismissive. Remember, Raul had just headed the ball out. To do that he flicks his head up-field. So the collision was magnified by his own head flick as well as Luiz's torpedo-like thrust. If you read the report from the skull and brain specialists in the B'ham Mail, you'll understand that healing the skull fracture is the easy part. It's very likely, given Raul's head movement, that some of his brain cells could have been overstretched and the consequences of that could be far-reaching. I most certainly hope not—but now is not the time to be frivolous about the seriousness of the injury. With any luck he won't remember a thing about it
