They didn't used to be but they are now. A quick Google and they say it's a mix of vegetable and rapeseed oil.I don't think McDonald's fries have ever been veggie friendly.

They're cooked separately in their own vat.Doesn't it sometimes come down to what they're cooked alongside rather than what they're cooked in?
I know Burger King don't consider their Halloumi option to be vegetarian/vegan friendly because it's cooked on the same grill as the other burgers.

It varies, the Burger King meat free burger isn't veggie or vegan as it's cooked alongside others. They were sued in the US for it because although they didn't claim it to be those things you'd ordinarily assume they were.
