Jasper Carrot released 'Funky Moped' and on the other side was 'Magic Roundabout'

An excerpt:-
`I wonder if Florence is a virgin?` `Drops 'em for certain.` ,said Dillon. `Booinngg!` `That s right enough.` ,said Zebadee. `How do you know?` ,said Dillon. `Booinngg!` `To my knowledge half of Toytown knows of her hori- zontal pleasures. Let s face it, Noddy's the biggest ram round here and he reckons he's scored.` ,said Zebadee. `I can hear you.` ,said Florence. `It s not true. Noddy and I are just good friends.` `Rubbish` ,said Dougal. `It s all over the canteen. Anyone knows about you, you brazen hussy.` `You lousy old flea-bag` ,said Florence. `Call yourself a dog? I've seen better hair on a lavatory brush!.`

Jasper did a few good sketches. I particularly liked The Mole and Biffer the Loopy Labrador

I liked his 'Bovril' sketch. "....ay Carrot they've got no cowin' bovril" when as Brum supporters they went to Man U.

"Alright Tone, what about the Blues?" "What about them?" "Thanks Tone"

Erm....I still have the LP with all those on. Jasper was really good at that time, coming out of the folk clubs along with Billy Connelly and Mike Harding etc. It was probably the birth of the Alternative comedy scene, appealed so much more to me than the standard bald old bloke, with a fag on, leaning on the mic stand telling mother-in-law, racist/sexist jokes.....although I'll let Les Dawson off for m-i-l jokes, he was class

Didn't go off theme as much as the crystal palace thread the other day when monstrum turned up

I still have a Jasper Carrot cassette tape. Includes mentioning that Funky Moped was banned by the BBC.

Ah yes you've jogged my memory. Magic Roundabout was the b-side which is why it was banned.

Didn't he sing Funky Moped on TOTP? Magic Roundabout was definitely banned by the Beeb.

The beeb banned a lot of records back then.

Some was a pure stunt, paid for by Record producers at a time when record sales were mega bucks.

Now you need sell so few tracks for a number 1 back in the 70's and 80's were roughly 150,000. Now they sell so very few but streaming is more popular and chart toppers last so short a time.

At the tine Radio 1 DJ's were as big a celebrities as the artisist themselves.

The listening figures for the radio 1 chart show in the 70's and 80's were huge, before listening to Annie Nightingale after.

For a publicity stunt that worked check.out Mike Reids reaction to Frankie goes to Hollywoods Relax.

It was going no where until he threw it accross the studio and refused to play it.

Now its a regular on Radio 2 and I even heard God Save The Queen by the Sex Pistols on Radio 2.

For someone who remembers the impact Punk had on us all in 1976/77 and Russell Hartys interview with the band thats absolutely amazing.

Relax was number 6 when it was banned and had already been on TOTP. It wasn't a publicity stunt, neither the band or the record company were in on what Mike Read and later Radio 1 in total did. No doubt it did wonders for sales though.

Also it was Bill Grundy rather than Russell Harty. Harty's infamous moment was being attacked by Grace Jones

Indeed it was Bill Grundy old age an all that.
As for Relax, call me cynical but i dont believe they were not all in on it.

Its well documented that at the time lots of back scratching etc was used to gain air play and boost sales.
