General Wolves News

Nailed the timing there! Raul gets a couple of days off and back in for team training from Thursday.

Wherever he ends up in the future. We’ll be safe in the knowledge his daughter will have Wolverhampton as place of birth on her passport.

[Sorry, I'm useless!]

Excluding that odd scenario where CL/Europa winners are English teams and finish outside Europe spots, does winning the CL/Europa have no effect on other teams, I.E pushing it down a place, I.E Man Utd finish 5th and win the EL, does their Europa spot just vanish?

So the only thing we're concerned with is finishing 6th and IF NOT then we are Chelsea fans in the FA Cup final, same as we were City fans last year?

Cheers :D

Yeah, if the winners of the Europa League or Champions League already qualify for either competition through their league position, then the lowest place disappears (rather than the exact spot) IIRC. So basically, in your scenario, it's actually the place that starts in the Qualifying Rounds that disappears.

There's only an extra place in total if the winners fail to qualify for anything

I really don't think it's a coincidence. Raul is finishing his career here.

As much I was would love that to be true, I can't see that transpiring.

Even if we establish ourselves as a top 6 side and make the Champions League, I can see him wanting to spend a few years playing at a famous European club like Real Madrid or Juventus. Footballers have short careers and he can literally take his pick on current form.

He's 30 before next season ends and we'd want a significant return on the £32m we paid. Don't think it's going to happen. Even superclubs like that rarely sink massive transfer fees at hugely depreciating assets (Ronaldo to Juve would be an exception, but he brings ridiculous value off the field being one of the most famous people in the world and all that).

He obviously loves it here. But if a top European side made it clear they definitely wanted him and had the money, maybe he'd ask for a move. That would lower our fee a bit.

So if that was to happen then 7th place no longer get Europa? Seems brutal

That can't be right, Chelsea won the Europa League last season, Liverpool won the Champions League last season, we finished 7th.

It's pretty simple. We can't finish 5th now. 6th and we qualify for the Europa League regardless. 7th and we need Chelsea to win the FA Cup. We get a chance of qualifying for the Champions League (as top seeds) as we can win this year's Europa League. I don't think anything else is relevant now.

There are too many permutations at this stage to say where and when we'd have to qualify in the event of finishing 6th/7th, you don't know who else is in the tournament or what our final coefficient for this season is going to end up being.

Ah yeah of course. Must not affect other teams then. The Prem website does make it look that way, it's not entirely clear though

Hopefully this is the case and I am proved wrong. I just cant see him playing here for another 5 or 6 years. Admittedly, this is just a hunch and I've nothing to base my opinion on, but I get the sense that Raul will want to try his hand in another league before he retires.

Its because you said the lowest place disappears when a team has already qualified for Europe, which it doesn't. That only happens if you get 5 CL spots with both CL/EL winners outside the top 4, then 4th place CL place disappears. The EL ones always just move down a place.
