Farage Ltd and Similar Watch

First UKIP MP at Clacton - not unexpected given that many in the constituency would have been voting for Carswell the man rather than the party he now represents.

But no doubt Labour have had a sleepless night given how close UKIP came to winning at Heywood & Middleton, a traditionally solid Labour seat.

May just be usual by election protest, but suspect that both main parties will be having nightmares over this now.

The interesting thing about H&M is that the Labour vote share actually increased. The reason for the closeness was that the Tories and LibDems completely hemorrhaged votes to UKIP.

So instead of non Lab votes being shared between two parties, resulting in a comfortable majority, they mostly went to one party, resulting in a close race. God knows what it means for a GE....

I just hope this country is not sleepwalking into disaster.

Wait until the UKIP voters realise that the party they have voted for are just the Torys x 100.

UKIP are NOT the Conservative party. They are a bunch of racist homophobe little Englanders with no other policies. Hopefully in the General Election the Conservative support will remember this.

Like Vis says, my concern is actually what will happen in the labour heartlands, where voters for the other two main parties may switch to UKIP to try and force the labour incumbent out. The nightmare scenario is the balance of power being held by Farage.

Where are Ukip getting the finance to bankroll them? I think with some serious funding, a new 'proper' manifesto, some defections from other parties and some backing in the media they can get a third of the vote in a GE. I also think it will be to the detriment of both labour and the tories

And so it came to pass....

The Clacton result is the worst ever Tory defeat in a by election - a 44.1% swing against them and a 28% fall in the Tory vote.
When you then throw whats happening up North to Labour it seems the British public vote on a soundbite rather than a policy.
Lots of tactical voting at the next general election it would seem.

Or the good people of Clacton voted for a man they thought best represented them in Parliament and had fook all to do with party politics?

Seems that had lots to do with it, a bloke who knows his constituents shocker. It could be the way to go for many of us wanting real representation.

Him or Beaufort T Justice.

"Get in the car Junior."
"But daddy!...... "

Farage and co give people the opportunity to be as nasty as they want to be, to say all the vicious things they've been thinking for years but, in their view, have not been "allowed" to say. Really don't like foreigners - now you can say so. Don't like gays - hey, there's a respectable political party who agree with you and are unafraid to say it. Think people with HIV are a danger to all and sundry - so does Nigel so you've found a friend. Ultimately, an awful lot of people really aren't very pleasant and are now feeling confident enough to be that way in public.

What chance Farage on the pre General Election TV debates instead of Nick Clegg?

Will the chancellors have a debate or would the Conservatives try and protect George Osborne from the economically competent Ed Balls?

Indeed.

The bigger danger for the Tories really is that if these defecting MPs start winning regularly for UKIP, more of their extreme right faction will follow suit. Why bother to hide behind a veneer of relative respectability if you're a horrible cunt and know you need make no bones about it any more?

Agree with this.

Dave has now adapted a new strapline - vote ukip, get labour.
He's linking the 2, hoping people won't vote for UKIP & will remain voting for his party instead. That implies a lot of nasties vote tory btw.

A bit amazeballs, as no-one has mentioned how bad the economy was left following the last labour government for a while...
