FA Cup 4th Round

While it was a shock, I don't think any of the fans that watched us at that time were overly surprised. I think I only missed three games [home and away] over several seasons around that time and I don't think, until the latter part of 86/87 I ever really expected anything other than defeat. That's why the rise back up the divisions was so memorable.
Our team, when we fell down the divisions and in 85/86 in particular, was assembled with players from a similar level to those playing for Chorley.
 
Reliably informed (it was before my time) that this was the team for the 0-3:

Matt Forman
Peter Zelem
Ally Robertson
Micky Holmes
Andy Mutch
Keith Lockhart
Neil Edwards

I only saw five of them for us (and it was fairly fleetingly in the cases of Bartram and Clarke) but there isn't much quality there.
 
One or two end of career journeymen (plus Ally Rob who was obviously much more than that), but the others that went onto be be looked upon fondly because of the Sherpa Van and double promotion (Mutch, Holmes, Streete, Stoutt) didn't really have any pedigree at this point. Smattering of local lads as well (Clarke, 2 x Edwards and Bartram)
 
Loved that time.

Home and away, no SatNav, easy ticketing, suspect transport, fantastic fan camaraderie, few commitments and seemingly endless beer.

We had a mental bunch of fans though!

That's a bit rose tinted, granted I was 10 the last time we played Chorley but the games were horrific, sometimes downright hostile, in awful weather and terraces that were cracked, stands there were death-traps and disgusting with people pissing on the ground they stood in some cases.

I don't remember a lot of fun in those days tbh.
 
I must be one of the few supporters who didn't claim to be at the match !!!!
 
Rose tinted obviously! But nevertheless I still loved it.

Granted the football was dire and that the stadiums were rubbish, but it was 'real' and was about more than just the 90 minutes. At ten I guess the beer wouldn't have been to your liking and I doubt you enjoyed the craic in getting to places in cars that didn't start/run/finish the journey but to a late teen/early twentysomething that period resulted in an adventure every weekend and most midweeks.

Our fans were certainly no angels and definitely would have been inappropriate for 10 year old eyes. However, you didn't have to be a hooligan or get involved in it [I didn't] and you could still have tremendous days out with your mates.

P.S. the PL and the football we experience now is a million times better than what we watched in those days, the stands are better and the seats aren't covered in rain or bird shit, but it has become a bit soulless at times and days out and trips to games don't quite have the same sense of adventure. I am in my fifties now though and I'm now longer 18, so football isn't the only thing that's not quite as memorable...

Anyone who is a similar age to me grew up watching us not long after this happened. But shows how quickly things can turnaround. Looking at that season after Xmas we went on a excellent run and if we had won at Southend near the end of the season probably would have been promoted, this obviously coincided with the acquisition of Bull.
The era of the late 80’s and first half of 1990 was really enjoyable especially considering I was just getting into football.
 
Our own ground was a fucking tip but I didn't know any different.

Fond memories but I wouldn't ever like to romanticise sitting 40 yards from the pitch or watching Paul Jones the midfielder.

I'm fairly sure we signed Shane Westley after his performance in that Southend game. A Friday night ko?
 
Southend were regular Friday nighters. Same as Stockport and Tranmere (maybe Hartlepool too).
 
Big Shane was really good before his injury. An absolute heid the ba but a good defender.

When he came back it was horrible to see, looked like a parks player. Still, I wouldn't want to be the one to tell him that.

Yep think there was some crowd trouble to that night, remember the highlights were on Saints & Greavsie on the Saturday

I'm that sad I can remember when I saw the goals! ITV used to have some crappy sports show on from 6am on a Saturday morning and I'd get up on my own to watch it. They were on there. Fairly sure David Crown did us over.

Pretty sure it unnerved my parents that I'd do such things. I haven't changed. People just sort of write it off now.
 
Why did a lot of teams play on Fridays back then? I assume it was they didn’t have to compete crowd wise with other big clubs nearby?

I remember him in the 4-3 win over Peterborough I think in a about 92 and looked terrible
