Painful to watch. Regardless of whether we were just going through the motions and doing bare minimum to get us through, it showed some of the tactical issues we have. My hope is that when Podence comes back, Dendoncker being our highest positioned midfielder won't be a thing anymore as it's so predictable to watch.

The fact Boly had to deal with the aerial balls made him our best outfield player but no one really deserves any praise individually. Vitinha showed some nice touches at time, but for him and some of the other younger ones you could see it was a culture shock for them, so hopefully they are better for the experience.

Don't think anyone is under any illusions that we will have to play better against Chelsea... but we are through, and that was all I actualyl care about from this game with two important games next week to come.

Totally agree with Dendoncker, he was our play maker at times when it should be João

They were both rubbish when they did actually get the ball but we also offered them scraps. Pat probably knows he's off lets be honest and Silva looked pretty shocked by the whole event!

You don't gain anything confidence wise from this game IMO, regardless of the performance or result.

The issues we saw in this game are nothing new though, they've been solved largely tactically when we play the right system with an actual attacking midfielder, a focal point and Dendoncker in his actual position.

Most important thing is getting through without injuries. Job done in the simplest of terms.

I don't agree that it was as bad as some believe, but I also don't think we can conveniently ignore the fact that even with close to our strongest team for the last 20 mins we still looked unconvincing, short on ideas and wasting much of the attacking talent in the team.

As Punts said, we see these things and these patterns in PL games so the pitch isn't relevant. We can see from this game that Nuno and the players are still doing the same things that have yielded precious little in recent weeks.

Lovely goal from Vitinha (OK a league keeper probably saves it), and he deserves credit for that moment of positivity and quality combined, which was like an oasis in the desert of this dull game!

Not a great performance but its a start, 1-0, solid mentally at least, in the 5th round.

We played as if the pitch was like Edgar Street in 1972. It was nowhere near as bad and thankfully Chorley didn't have a Ronnie Radford. Boly and Ruddy ok, subs calmed things down and no injuries by the look of it. Other than that woeful.

No, but it can harm confidence. And the players will be coming off the pitch thinking how poor they were against a Conference North side

He was no different to the majority of players for us tonight. Thankfully he can return to his plans for this season once Jose arrives.

Chorley did very well, they were really well organised and didn't give us much room to play in. They closed the WBs down quickly and we were never going to play intricate football through the middle which didn't leave us any real options when attacking.

They had a game plan, executed it well and made chances from set pieces and a couple on the break by getting the ball forward early.

I don't think either of them will start (be Fabio if so though - Cutrone will be off again this month). Think it will be a 3412 with Traore and Neto as the wide players and Vitinha/Moutinho as the 'ten' seeing as no podence or MGW.

Not sure it did much but raise further concerns about where the team currently is in terms of mentality, playing style, etc. Win is a win, yes, but geez.

Palace away last year was dreadful but we managed to kick on afterwards, might be a bit much to expect similar but I live in hope

I agree with whoever it was that said, bar going through to the next round, there’s no positives to take from tonight.

They had 5 x shots on target - and let’s be fair - Ruddy has had to bail us out a few times - we’ve had one shot on target in 90 minutes against a conference north side. Passive passing throughout and no cohesion between any of the players. Christ, we had to bring Adama, Neves & Neto on!

Tactically, again, it’s awful. We don’t go to Chelsea full of confidence because of tonight’s result & performance. If anything, it’s potentially damaged it even further

I mentioned it in the matchday thread but I actually think Moutinho is a bigger hindrance than a positive these days.

Anyway, as plenty of posters keep saying, we’re through. Now let’s never speak of it again.
