Ex-Wolf Watch

On Wed night I met a bloke in the pub who was wearing Ruddy's old Castore 3/4 zip top. The dark green one. Turns out he knows the Wolves kit man Dave (apparently).

I don't think Ikeme was shit. He was a decent lower Championship level keeper. Had some good moments and some beyond terrible moments.

His fuck ups at Stockport, as Paul mentions, were brilliant. Their fans hated him (a shame as they loved Hennessey and Gleeson when they had them on loan)

He started off as a sort of wish.com Matt Murray (overcommitting on crosses to a point where he carried the ball out of his box multiple times) and ended up as someone who never took any cross ever and any shot on target from 25+ yards would probably go in. Could never ever kick to save his life. ALWAYS got injured at least once a season too.

We've been very much spoiled by keepers from Kendall onwards (possibly Bradshaw/Flowers/Burridge before that for anyone old enough to remember, I am not) so anyone who isn't that good stands out.

Wolves have never aspired to be lower level Championship so he was never up to the standard required.

If ever you're bored try and find some videos of when he was on loan , some proper comedy moments there :)
I've seen a few of his on-loan howlers but I generally thought he did a pretty good job for us, all things considered.

But boy did we try to do it...

The cross stuff at the beginning was great. Especially the times he got away with taking a ball outside the area.
He would have games where he looked unbeatable (Brighton away was one) and then games like Birmingham at home where he would just switch off and have zero awareness

Extra credit point for losing his shit under Saunders (after a comical own goal incident) even if it did mean breaking his hand hitting the tactics board (with Deano's tactics that would have been a huge thing, If hit it in the middle it was probably Plan L he took out)

I'll be fair and say that was a SHIT backpass by Davis. But I was sat right behind it and for bloody ages Ikeme did this stupid thing of trying to trap the ball with his shins. Was always going to cost him. What was his reasoning, we'll never know.

That was the final game I ever went to under Saunders.

I remember drawing 1-1 at Forest and there was an inevitability about the free kick Gary Gardener scored.

Ikeme's positioning and footwork from free kicks was horrific. Chris Martin had dropped one in at home to Derby too from a fairly identical position IIRC.

He went through a stage of always moving just before the kick was taken and then he was screwed if it went the other way.

I came over for that game. If I remember correctly I was in North Bank with Darlo and co.

Just seen Bright joined Rukh Lviv last month. Moving to Ukraine right now is quite the switch.

Jon Flatt back at Wolves as part of an expanded goalkeeping staff.

Was just coming to post this

Flatt left Villa a few backs back

Seems a sensible way forward. Moving on from just 1 specialised coach in that area and also covers us should the main one leave/get sacked in the interim

Maybe naive of me, but disappointing to hear he was basically given the O'Hara treatment towards the end. Surely you can still let him train, change and eat with the main squad even if you're trying to punt him on, and only bomb squad him if he starts to effect the atmosphere around the place? Always struck me as a proper pro
