Euro 2016 watch

When Hoddle made Shearer captain he said he made a striker captain to add credibility to any penalty claims.
In football, and international football more so than club football, captaincy is almost an irrelevance and should be decided on a match by match basis.
Natural leaders will come to the fore regardless of whether they are wearing an armband or not. It should not affect team selection.

Goes for a number of them Mike. Hart, Sterling, Shaw,

He was doing fine before injury, before Christmas he was unusually poor.
He can't be in form when injured.

Your second point is far, I prefer a defender or CM myself, but there's no one else

He has a 1 in 3 strike rate this season, which is ok but nothing compared to Vardy or Kane - both have had far better seasons and his form certainly hasn't been good enough to suggest he should automatically start.

Accepted that he can't play his way into form when injured. When is he due back? As he almost always needs plenty of game time to get back up to match fitness.

Next week I believe. Vardy hasn't scored in six weeks for Leicester by the way.

But did score an absolute stunner for England on Saturday!

Hopefully Rooney will be fit and in form for the Euros, the more competition for places the better.

He also set up Okazaki to score the winner in Leicester's last game.

Vardy is in great form, no matter how you try and dress it up otherwise.

In not trying to dress anything up whatsoever. That was and indeed is a fact.

I like the player and I'd take him fwiw

We get that you have a hard on for Wayne Rooney, NWW.

9 out of 10 England fans wouldn't have him in their best 11 any more. It doesn't need debating any more - that's how it is, although we respect your opinion.

Loved him since his Everton days. A throwback footballer wrote off by too many!

Rooney if fit goes - whether he starts depends on Hodgson mindset at that point (if not fit then he shouldn't any more than anyone else not fully fit should whoever they are)

The captaincy issue is not really that relevant - pick the team then name on onfield captain - Rooney can still be named as the official England squad captain whether he is on the pitch or not

Some strange comments on the BBC live feed page this morning concerning England - but also interesting to see fans of other clubs perspectives on who should be picked.

Could a case be made for taking any of Marcus Rashford, Michail Antonio or Mark Noble to the Euros?

For me, Rashford is a definite no. Far too soon to be exposing a player of his age to a platform like that. And I understand the saying is "if you're good enough, you're old enough", but Rashford himself failed to score for England under 20's against Canada - and Southgate deliberately left him out of the Under 21's to protect him a bit as well. So you'd have to say there's next to no chance of him even being considered.

There seem to be a lot of West Ham fans suggesting Antonio over Walcott. Not sure I agree. He's direct, skillful and fast - but Walcott is all of those things but with more experience. I understand Theo has had an underwhelming season - but for me, he's being written off too easily. His pace, along with someone like Vardy, could really cause opposition teams problems.

Noble is an interesting one. He's had a fantastic season. Would he be a better option than someone like Jordan Henderson? Possibly. But I just can't see him getting in an already competitive area of the squad.

It's fantastic that we actually have some proper options across the squad. Big question mark for me is our central defence. Smalling, Stones, Cahill & Jagielka - none of them fill me with confidence on the world stage (Stones has the potential but this might be a tournament too early).

The main thing I'm looking for this evening is how the coach Roy Hodgson integrates the skills of John Stones into his defensive unit while also adding his passing ability into and through midfield.
One big concern from the game against Germany is how little ball Harry Kane received because the feed into Dele Alli was not top draw. By adding Stones England should be able to build better because by adding such a player more passing options should present themselves.

Personally, I'd like to see Noble instead of Henderson but I know it's not going to happen. I wouldn't be taking Rashford or Antonio though, I feel we have enough alternatives without them. Rashford could well be one for the future but I think it is too soon to take him especially as we have several good options up front already (I would take Rooney, however, if fit).

I think my squad would be:

Hart
Forster
Heaton

Bertrand
Rose
Cahill
Smalling
Stones
Jagielka
Clyne
Walker

Dier
Drinkwater
Noble
Milner
Lallana
Alli
Barkley
Sterling

Kane
Rooney
Welbeck
Vardy

I'd rather not be taking Jagielka, but can't think of an alternative unless you rely on Dier as your 4th CB and pick an extra midfielder. If Wilshere was fit (and likely to stay fit) I'd take him instead of Milner. I'd like to have seen Cresswell given a chance for England by now but decided not to pick him ahead of Rose or Bertrand.

Some big names missing out there; Baines, Walcott, Wilshere, Sturridge...

The more I look at the squad, the more I think Drinkwater will miss out. It wouldn't be surprising to see someone like Sturridge go ahead of Walker - with Walker being a clear second choice, if we were to have an injury to Clyne there are other players who could slot in at right back (Dier or even Stones).

Yeah, I think that is the way to go. Which one is more likely to have an impact on tournaments. We took Wayne Bridge to three tournaments and he made two sub appearances, it's a waste of a spot taking a specialist right back as cover for me.

My primary issue with Sturridge is there's no way he's going to play all the games given the short turnaround, which leads you on to whether it's worth taking someone who you can't rely on to start. Well that and he's been utter pap for England so far as well.

Eight changes.

Forster

Walker Stones Smalling Rose

Drinkwater

Milner Lallana

Barkley

Vardy Sturridge

Or could be a three of Vardy, Sturridge, Lallana up top?

He has played very well for Liverpool lately. I suspect Roy is giving him a chance to translate that into performances for England.

His versatility is useful, can either sit behind a front two or play wider as part of a front three, and he's keen on pressing high up off the ball so he helps set the tone in that respect.

Yeah and I think he did that pretty well in the game against Germany. I think he will be a useful squad member in the Euros.

Might be a useful character to have around too, wasn't he captain at Southampton with quite a lot of young players around him?
