Coronavirus

Fair to say that the obese countries are also older western societies, probably difficult to separate them. Japan is an interesting case - low deaths, fairly low on the obese scale, but old and urban population.

What was their government response?

You also have to factor in SARS and MERS which may or may not have had mitigating factors for preparedness and response to a pandemic.

Still looks politically motivated to me. The news article is suggesting a link without proof just statistical analysis (which isn't the same thing as causality).

'We must stop being fat' is the message which leads to government control of populations, what they eat, how often they exercise and that's a bit too Big Brother for me (especially having not long reread 1984).

And the report was written by a bunch of people told to find being overweight bad by the looks of things. What a shock they found that being overweight is bad.

My problem with judging any population by weight is where do you start with being overweight and on what basis? Plenty of fit and healthy folks that are overweight.

There are two sizeable clusters - bottom left & top right. There are clearly loads of other factors at play (urban density I would imagine, clarity of government response), but its clear that obesity is a very serious issue.

Massive gaping chasm between the two clusters though which is what troubles me, you'd expect at least some degree of linear progression between the two groups if it was the real driver but there's nothing in there at all.

Luke Shaw for instance...

They've got some brass neck I'll give them that.

When this pandemic is under control they'll be getting the shellacking they deserve.

Hancock - The unbreakable link between cases, hospitalisation and deaths is now broken.

Surely then, the link wasn't unbreakable at all, we just had the wrong tools until December

As warned, it's half a day after I had my vaccine and I feel as rough as arseholes. Uncontrollable shaking at around 4am has now settled into every joint in my body aching. I've foisted the dog walking onto the ladies of the house, so I'm going to milk this for all it's worth and stay in bed all day.

Fair play, milk it for all its worth. Was it the Pfizer or AZ? Its very strange how it affects everyone differently. No effects whatsoever for me, missus had hers Thursday, intially no problems, then during the night she had to get up and take pain killers for a headache, then by lunch time fine again.

Got my first jab next week....at a bowling alley in Wellington!
That is one of the places I could be helping out at so good to see how they operate as I wait for shifts to become available.

Currently living in the area of the country with the highest covid cases. Case numbers are similar to when schools closed in January.
I can’t see a scenario now where cases aren’t going to fly up again. There’s no local outbreak it’s just cases haven’t fell like in the rest of the country.
Vaccines have run out at local vaccination centres and according to the bbc news last night it’ll be 10 days before supplies are returned to the levels required.

Case numbers only matter if the hospital numbers rise as they have done previously. The media really need to be aware of this in the coming weeks but I doubt they will.
You can have the jab and still test positive but as the vaccine will reduce the spread and cut most infections down to an annoying illness or maybe a day or 2 in bed, case numbers will no longer be what is counted in this country.
All eyes on the hospital numbers once we hit, I think i heard, 63% of adults having at least 1 dose. Currently at 40%

Very strange. I had mine on Wednesday (AZ) and spent the next 2 days waiting for something to happen, but nothing at all; I could hardly even see where the needle went in, let alone feel it. No one I know has had a reaction either. Mrs H hasn't had her jab yet but has heard a couple of reports (though she must 'know' about a million people on fb so what do you expect). You'd think there has to be a reason, some sort of common denominator among those worst affected, and I daresay once this is all over some clever chaps in white coats will work it out. The reactions are caused by the body being stimulated to produce antibodies, so are confirmation that the vaccine is doing its job. Let's hope it's doing as good a job on the rest of us. FWIW, the scientific advice I've heard (on John Campbell's YT channel) is to avoid 'treating' the side effects (e.g. with paracetamol) unless they become unbearable because it's better to let the body carry on fighting the war (by making antibodies) than to think it's all over. Easier said than done, though, I expect.

On vaccine doses. W/c 15th March supply will be back to full and we should start seeing some high daily numbers, Predictions of enough supply to do 5m a week from that point

I agree with all that Kenny. Just think locally schools opening could be put off especially when 1/2 of hospitalisations are the under 50s although thankfully most recover.
