Burton build up...

It surprised me he recommended it, knowing how fussy he is.
I have only ever been to two Spoons pubs I could call "good". The one near the Lace Market in Nottingham and the Moon in Deansgate Manchester. All others are take your chances...
Would be interested in a Western v London comparison for whenever I might get up next?

I wouldn't oversell the London, it's alright for what it is. On a matchday you're after getting served fairly quickly, getting a spot so you can at least all congregate fairly easily (even if not everyone can grab a seat), sport if possible, decent beers, not too far away from the ground or the station. It ticks those boxes. It's functional rather than a must visit.

I hate the landlord in the Western so I am the wrong person to ask about that one.

Totally agree with DW about the Moon. It's awful.

As for the Western v the London, they're very different places so not really comparable. Both good for beer but depends what floats your boat. I prefer the traditional pub style which is why I prefer the Western but the London is also very good with a completely different vibe. And much more convenient for getting to the ground.

I intend on visiting both tomorrow!

The Western is fantastic. I go there most days for a pint on the way home, and I love it. However, a lot of the matchday gang don't go there, and the London is acceptable as a substitute. Light, reasonably airy, good beer selection.

Will definitely try the Western next time, don't know when that will be, but as I have never seen Wolves win live, it won't be until we are definitely up, and then only if I can get a ticket.
Thanks.

25 fucking minutes I waited in there pre QPR. TWICE. Ask Mr Hullis. Then I took Cass out early to get a scarf as we were in the Steve Bull and was expecting a massive queue, we walked straight in. Fucked up day that was.

It's the big crowds* fucking up the wait times. I guarantee you the Western is no better in that respect, I like the Posada but you basically can't move in there after 1pm. Realistically you now have to pick a pub around midday and stay there. Move after a couple of drinks and try to go somewhere else - you've got no chance (unless you're moving somewhere to meet someone who already has a table, even that's not a sure bet - the London wouldn't let Jinky in once but I reckon that's fair enough).

For quick service pre-match the Litten is probably the best bet as they generally employ good people. For some reason folk on here have a downer on it - to me I order broadly the same thing in every pub so I don't give a shit about the drinks, plenty of screens, near the ground, not going to have to wait forever and ever, cheap...meh. I'm not as fussy as others clearly. The Hogs is a better pub (owned by the same group) but it's rubbish for matchdays. The layout is just wrong - they can't do anything about that, it's just the nature of the building. It's a nightmare.

The Sunbeam has a Linton Travel Tavern vibe, I always feel very odd in there :icon_lol:

*Glory hunting wankers

I was in the western before the Norwich game, service was surprisingly quick I thought.

Equally I've never had anything like a serious wait in the London during the entire season...5-10 minutes max maybe.

I used the Western for pretty much every home game between 2005 and 2010 and it was always a shambles after around 1.15 on a Saturday game. The building hasn't changed and there isn't any more space so I don't see why it would be any different now. Midweek is a different bag, you're not going struggle anywhere really (except the Moon, where they could have 50 staff and 3 customers and still mess it up).

Barnsley was a weird one, went to pop in Slaters for one with my dad and it was literally bursting at the seams so we went in Boho and The London and they were dead. I suppose it will be quieter being a midweek game but both were relatively empty.

You were in the shitty Litten for QPR otherwise you would have.

Slaters is shit, neither a bar nor a pub. They really haven't thought that through.

Midweeks are weird, always seems busy everywhere and like a mad rush, but it's pretty much the only chance I get to dump the kids and go to the pub before a game.

Yeah, I was sitting down watching football and having a decent drink. What a mug! :D

The Western is fucking ace. There again I've supped in there for over 40 years.

I don’t rate Slaters at all, it’s pretty shit. We only headed there as they’d got a beer on I wanted me old man to try.

I like Sister's beer, and had a few of their beers at my old pub. But I popped into their bar after Cardiff. It was not great.

Have to say I love the horns and drums that have made their way into MLS culture. Hearing a lone trumpet blare the Tetris song is just part of the fabric of a Chicago match, for example.

I do get that some would find it annoying, though, and IMO should be left up to the fans in some measure. Do all English clubs have a fan council or similar?

Football still isn't a "major" sport in the US. If it drums up the atmosphere some I kinda get it, but I'd rather stand on a terrace of 5000 people all singing in harmony "Steve Claridge is a wanker" any day!
Talking of which obscenities are a no no as I found out a few years ago! :D :D
I went to a college football game a few years ago, Alabama Crimson Tide, 100k people in the stadium and you cudda heard a pin drop between plays, very disappointing

I've always found chants horribly cheesy tbh.

Don't get me started on my fellow Alabama fans. Half the time they start leaving early. Really pisses me off.
