Brentford (H) 15/4: Build-Up & Match Thread

Every year when a player doesn't make the team someone makes up the Ramadan excuse. It's not now, wasn't at any time in the past and I doubt very much ever will be in the future either
I can't think of anybody that happened to in the last few seasons.

If Lopetegui only wants one full back and one center back on the bench (might well be the case, Julen clearly likes to rotate his forward players in game and might prefer more options there) then it might just be that he rates Toti & Bueno higher at this particular moment and there just isn't space for him in the match day squad.

Don't think he's going to have dropped him completely for one mistake during a game, he doesn't strike me as that sort of manager.

Raul not being in the squad is nearly more interesting . Heading down the pecking order .

With the high levels of fitness footballers have anyone who thinks not drinking or eating from dawn to dusk isn’t going to impact on a player’s performance is deluded. I have no idea if RAN observes it strictly but not drinking from just after 6am until the end of a game if it’s a 3pm ko simply must have an impact.

He didn't make the squad for the Spurs game which was before Ramadan started. It's nothing to do with it, just like it isn't every year.
It may or may not be something to do with RAN being left out and I would think the medical and fitness regimen now are much better regulated than under Lage.

To say Ramadan has nothing to do with a footballers body is stupid. All fasting does as it interferes with a number of processes in the body.

Some players try and condition themselves for it but caloric intake, water intake and the timing of both are hugely important to any athlete and any change disrupts the human mechanism.

I know personally that some players didn't play for several PL and EFL clubs because of Ramadan and that was 15 years ago.

There's a coach in France who asked his players not to observe Ramadan this month, think it might've been the Lille coach?

Was allegedly Gaultier of PSG who also allegedly said there were too many black and Muslim players at Nice when he was there.

Can't say nuffink these days, bloody woke brigade.

A point not made by anybody
What are you saying then as I thought you said there were posts every year about players observing Ramadan?

Difficult to know where you move goal posts to these days, other than to be right of course.

So just to be clear fasting affects a player but doesn’t affect their performance. Might as well save money and get rid of any conditioning staff and a couple of Bensons at halftime won’t do any harm.

That makes me sad Johnny. I'm not moving goalposts, I'm saying at this time of year someome says, often but not exclusively Alan that play x, often but not exlclusively Saiss isn't playing because of Ramadan. They aren't playing because of alternative reasons, in Saiss' case normally form leading up to it - he was poor coming back from the AFCON last year. In RAN's who knows but his spot on the naughty step started before Ramadan therefore it's not because of it

I don't recall ever bringing up Ramadan, but I understand why my reputation would make that believable from me.

I genuinely couldn't tell you when it is for any given year.

Then I apologise Alan
