Board Game recommendations

And as an aside we needed somewhere close to the NEC to stay but the ones right next door were too pricey so booked one in Coleshill. Wish I'd known it was the centre of the world for the dregs of humanity, what a shithole! Should have probably sought advice from some actual Midlanders like you lot before booking anywhere...

Your calling Coleshill the dreggs of humanity, are you sure you didnt stop in Chelmsley Wood? Big asda, fast food outlets, tower blocks and oddly the cheapest card shops around a bomb scare of a shopping centre, the other has a morrisons adjacent a cricket pitch with a small even bordering on quaint high st, second hand bookstores etc.

Dragging this thread back up having been playing a couple of brilliant games over the holiday period. First one is a game called Wingspan, which I really don't know how to describe except that it's ace. It's a card based engine-building game, basically meaning you're trying to play cards that fulfill different roles to score points. Sounds confusing, but it is dead easy to pick up and great fun to play.

And then any of the games in the Undaunted series are highly recommended, though I have yet to properly try out Undaunted Stalingrad. Undaunted Normandy, North Africa and Reinforcements are terrific. Deck building strategy games, the Undaunted series is brilliant.

I also was bought Sniper Elite: The Board Game but have yet to play that one. Based on the video games it's what is known as a hidden movement game, a bit like the Jaws boardgames. One player is the sniper, charting their movement on a secret hidden board and the other (up to 3) players control German patrols trying to detect and eliminate the sniper. It looks great fun and has had fantastic reviews.

I'm bringing this back again, as I have a new recommendation, especially if you are a fan of chess type strategy games, a game called Hive. Absolutely brilliant thinking game, very much in the genre of chess. You have tiles that are various 'bug' type creatures (ants, grasshoppers, beetles, spiders) and the aim of the game is to surround your opponent's queen bee so that it is unable to move. Each bug has its own way of moving around the 'hive', but there can only be one hive so all pieces must be connected to at least one other piece at all times. It is tremendous. A game can be over in 10 minutes or it can take half an hour or more. Very highly recommended.

Not really for this thread, but the 10th edition of Warhammer 40,000 is about to be released.

Definitely counts for this thread IMO. There was loads of Warhammer stuff going on at UKGE. Tabletop games, board games, wargames, hobby games, DnD. This thread caters for them all I reckon.

Haven't really played since 3rd... Probably a very different game these days!

Miss my old CSM army. Stupid 16 year old Alan thought it would be a brilliant idea to sell it...

This is a picture from the game of Giant Risk at the Expo! Insane! The map was Britain all divided into regions: the North-East was called Jordy Land. 😂😂

Fuck, I love a tabletop full of miniature miniature regalia...

In fact, back when I did play 40k I think I was always more taken with sculpted tables than the games or the miniatures. Had a similar obsession with miniature train landscapes as a lad, too. Call me Bobby Bacala.

They also had 3 tables dedicated to a game based on Band of Brothers. I have absolutely no idea how to play those sort of games, but damn, it looked fucking great!

My top 5 current game recommendations for anyone interested:

Wingspan looks so fucking sick.

Interestingly, (well it is to me anyway), the game currently regarded as the best boardgame around is set in the West Midlands during the Industrial Revolution and the aim is to create the most successful industry you can by building factories and trade links between places around the Midlands. The game is called Brass Birmingham and is the highest rated game on Board Game Geek.

How on earth do you play The Thing as a board game? Because I really want it.
