Best holiday destinations

Looked at hire cars yesterday. Almost spat my burger out when cheapest one came out at £755
Due to pay around £700 for ours in Canada next month....just checked not picking it up from Heathrow.

Think we paid extra as picking up from Montreal and dropping off at Toronto

Trivago is a good site but be wary if they direct you through a further third party - Algotels.

We're off to Liverpool tomorrow for my birthday, all booked and paid for weeks ago, but it gets to yesterday and I still haven't had any official confirmation. So used their contact form and got what was obviously a generic "yeah, it's all fine, the hotel will confirm nearer the date" message. All attempts to get proper confirmation from them fell on stony ground.

Been monitoring my email all day while at work and nothing. Get in touch again, same generic message. What do you mean "nearer the date", it's tomorrow! Ended up phoning the hotel directly and it is all sorted - but there are plenty of reviews around saying people have turned up and there's no record of the reservation at all. Which obviously I can't have (particularly as I didn't realise when I booked it that it's Grand National weekend - so if there's no reservation, I doubt I'd be able to go anywhere else, the whole city will be booked up).

Given that I have bipolar and Mrs DW has anxiety, we cannot deal with uncertainty when it comes to travel.

So no drama in the end, looking forward to it, but will still be sending them a load of shit about the awful service.

They'll get a fuller email when I'm back home after the break, but they decided it would be a good idea to send me an email asking me to rate the customer service :D

1/5 (no option for 0/5) and:

Absolutely awful service. Asked multiple times for confirmation of booking - 48 and 24 hours before arrival - and nothing beyond the same generic response.

Had to phone the hotel directly in the end and thankfully the booking is there but will never use Algotels again. A dreadful experience.

Could be worse. You could end up with a view of M&S and an Aldi...

It beats the view when I stay in Sheffield, that is usually just a Next with Meadowhall hanging around in the background.

The great thing about this hotel is its situation. It's equidistant between Sheffield and Rotherham. That's the genius of its location. Even though I do hate it and I don't live here.

We stay at the Premier Inn in Castleford overlooking the Xscape Leisure Complex. I enjoy standing by the window on a Saturday night watching the boy racers speeding and wheel spinning around the car park

I’ll bookmark that in case I’m ever in Castleford. Takes me back to my misspent youth, would love that.

The best hotel view I ever had:

To be fair worth booking into a Premier Inn every 6 weeks or so just for the quality of the sleep. Awesome mattresses and pillows.

I know you can buy exactly the same ones to have at home through their website. I’ve had enough pissing around with mattresses etc over the years and next time I’m going all in with the Premier Inn set up. Any psychological advantage for a good nights sleep so might even stick a tray with a kettle and a couple of cups on the side and a travel iron in the wardrobe too.

We used to stay at the Pontefract one but as there is no air con the rooms are ridiculously warm even in Autumn/Winter months let alone one June evening in 2023 which was one of the warmest on record and like sleeping in a sauna.

Castleford has air con with the added bonus of the boy racers doing laps!
