Best holiday destinations

Lovely pictures there. For one reason or another have never been to Yorkshire other than driving straight through, probably just falling into the Peaks/Lakes habit which as wonderful as they are, have pretty much been done to death.
Really must get into exploring Yorkshire, looks fantastic.

Much as I love the Lake District, it does get bloody crowded. The Dales get tourist traffic for sure but not to such mental levels.
If you want quieter but still high by English standards, I can strongly recommend going right off the M6 and heading to Alston. The northern pennines are great and cross fell is not that far short of the heights of lakeland. It is 893 metres, so not that far under 3,000 feet. There are only four peaks in Lakeland over the 3,000 foot threshold (Scafell, Scafell Pike, Helvellyn, and Skiddaw)

Thanks, will look into that. The FiL lives in Burton so normally have a few nights in the peaks when visiting him but a couple of times have gone last minute or in term time and have been absolutely mullered with Airbnb costs, and as you say crowds, so recently have picked random non-tourist small towns, used the AllTrails app for the hike and have had some an awesome stays. Has become a thing now to use the app to select a hike off right off the radar to build the stay around, then find somewhere nice but much more reasonably priced to stay and it has worked really well. Sort of kept the Peak District fresh but definitely ready to look at Yorkshire now.
Funny you mention Helvellyn, two years ago that was the first mountain I ever turned back on. Have the paradox of loving being high but suffer from vertigo and Helvellyn was the first time it spilled over into dangerously swaying and had to turn back. Strange how your mind makes you counterbalance the wrong way making it really quite dangerous, but it’s been a problem which has been getting worse and since then am more cautious with cliff edges and very sheer ridges.
Just before Helvellyn did some hiking in Bulgaria that freaked me out so I guess it’s some sort of defence mechanism telling you that’s enough. I know some people can stand right on the edge of cliffs etc but I’m way past that sort of thing now.

Go up Helvellyn from Thirlmere rather than Striding or Swirral Edge. A duller ascent but none of those nasty drops.

Wife and I have booked an organised japan tour for May. Tokyo - Kyoto - Osaka. Any suggestions for other places to visit for a day or two afterwards. I was thinking maybe Mt Fuji?
I put out a similar shout last year after booking a trip to Japan and China for the start of this year which unfortunately had to be cancelled. There are a few on here that have been who posted some really useful information.
Take a look on pages 44 (Tredman and Tom Hark), p47 (Tred & White Wolf), and p49/50 (Dire Wolf who was actually in Japan as he posted).

Nara is a good day trip from Kyoto or Osaka. Mount Fuji is often hidden with cloud and mist - if the weather is decent, you'll get a good view of it from the bullet train between Tokyo and Kyoto/Osaka, if that is the way you are travelling. Hiroshima is another possibility.

Took the family there in October half-term; I remember going to Mother Shiptons when I was a kid and wanted to do it with mine before they grow up too much. We spent a couple of days in York, a day up to Whitby including seeing the Flying Scotsman, and out to Ribblehead viaduct. Glorious scenery.

I did all of these places last year. For a day trip I recommend going to Himeji on the train, it has a brilliant castle.
