Best holiday destinations

Sorry to hear that. Hoepfully you'll get round to going later in the year?

No, this will probably mean a cheap Christmas too. We're going to Portugal in April for a hen/stag do thing and have now said we'll save up properly and have a week in the sun next September. But no chance of a city break anytime soon unfortunately.

Whereabouts in the Land of the Long White Cloud mate?

We were planning on the capital Wellington and use a hire car to ravel the surrounding areas. But is Wellington the best part ? There's also Auckland and Christchurch isn't there.

Wellington and Auckland are both on the north island and about 6 -7 hours drive. Christchurch is on South Island. Where does your cousin live? Wellington?

After much discussion last night, we've decided to treat ourselves next summer and go all inclusive somewhere. Liking the look of Rhodes - warm with a bit of culture. Marvellous.

We're looking at mid-September after the kids are back at school and I can brag to the teachers about going away when they are actually doing some work after having smug comments aimed at me for the 6 fucking weeks preceding it. Mwahahaha.

Anyone been? (To Rhodes, not school).

A long time ago. 1981.

We stayed in the north of the island. Not far from Rhodes Town. Definitely get yourself down to have a look at the acropolis at Lindos.

Lindos is nice, esp for rooftop eating which all the restaurants have. In which case you wouldn't want to go All Inc. I think it's more a week away hol if that was your plan. you want to check the weather's still good.

I'd want to visit Rhodes Town, certainly. I love Hellenic architecture and the main town sounds fantastic. Lindos is on the east side of the island isn't it?

Yep - about half way down. Past Falaraki and keep going.

Like I say, it is a long time ago, but I can remember steep steps up to the acropolis (you can hire donkeys at no doubt a very reasonable rate) and half way up there is this massive relief of a greek boat cut into the cliff side.

Rhodes Town is pretty standard greek islands but with extra Knights of somebody-or-other bonus bits chucked in. It is a pretty decent Greek island.

I'd really recommend Corfu too. Corfu Town is absolutely beautiful.

Thanks, folks!

Lindos looks awesome after a quick google! We did find a lovely place not too far from Rhodes Town but I'll look on t'other side of the island as well before we commit to anything. And I'll look into Corfu as well - ta Nando. We've already looked at Crete as well. Much to ponder.

I'm just not having another shit summer like the last one - crap weather and no break!!

Lindos well worth it but you definitely want to be going to different evening restaurants if you go there imo. nighttime with all the restaurant lights on is great. i think there must be restaurants overlooking the whole town as well.

i've stayed at a place called the white palace in crete, nr rethymnon. half board - has a decent beach, great sunsets from an amazing cocktail bar, huge buffets for brekkie and main dinner. 15 mins by cab into rethymnon which is a decent historic town. quite busy and prob not cheap if my missus had anything to do with it, which she did.

you just need to know your priorities are - not everywhere in Greece has a sandy beach for instance. some of the towns may be small, so if you want to see and do things rather than just relax then it's a different choice.

We want a mixture of relaxing and seeing things. So a day doing fuck all by the beach/pool, then maybe a day out somewhere with a bit of culture about it, maybe a boat trip. We certainly don't intend on constantly hopping between sites every day.

Sandy beach isn't a must, shingle beach is fine.

Trianda in the north of Rhodes might suit

Funny you mention that because the one we like best is in Trianda. I've been looking during my lunch break and TBH I haven't seen anything better anywhere else. It's close to the airport so a short transfer, Rhodes Town is a short bus/taxi ride away too.

Langers, avoid Faliraki whatever you do, it's the worse Torremolinas and more.
Don't go all inclusive there are so many restuarants and historic places to see it's better if your only tie to your hotel is the bed.
If you can find a cheap hire car within your budget (or hire a small motorbike ) you will have a brilliant time.
Rhodes town is excellant especially at night, rooftop tavernas surrounded by historic old buildings, and the beaches all around the island are fantastic. Forget the all inclusive, rent a car or a moped and you will have a stunning time.

Ever considered Croatia? Just returned from 2 weeks in Cavtat, a little harbour about 40 minute water taxi or 20 minute bus ride from Dubrovnik?

Days spent sunbathing and snorkelling and evening supping beer, wine and eating the bet fish I have ever eaten!

We were even visited by Abranovich and Lord Ashcroft in their multi million (billion) yachts.

Third time visited the country and for someone who doesn't like repeating the same place twice that is saying something!

The beaches are rock as opposed to sand or shingle but this makes the fishes even easier to see swim round your feet!

We ended up booking a very nice looking hotel here. It was as cheap to book all inclusive as we booked so early so that's what we've done.

Close to Rhodes Town, close to the Valley of Butterflies, close to the airport - perfect.

Just got to wait 10 and a half months now! I've realised its the first holiday I have booked myself since 2007! A shocking statistic.
