Theme Park and zoo, last time I visited it (which was about 20 years ago) some of the animals were in a absolute state and I vowed not to go back.

Discovered Whitby last September, lovely place. We had a fortnight in Yorkshire waiting for our granddaughter to be born so did the second week at Scarborough and travelled to Whitby.

We missed her birth by 6 days!

I prefer Whitby to Scarborough. Bridlington is dreadful though.

I agree. Had never been to Scarborough before and our first impressions were that we didn't like it but we did quite like the Peasholm Park/Scalby end when we discovered it. Whitby is far far nicer

I'd look to raise Council Taxes and Stamp Duty on second homes to a level that stops housing in our costal areas becoming playthings for the wealthy.

Yes, that end of Scarborough is quieter/more appealing depending on what you are looking for. Sandsend just to the North of Whitby is good too if you just want to potter along the beach without the shops/crowds etc.

What price is that tho? It's an issue Wales has struggled with. I believe 2nd homes there are now subject to a 300% council tax.

Stamp duty increases and capital gains tax have stripped margins on additional properties to the extent they have effectively killed the pension-plan Grandlords and buy-to-leters. The introduction of 5% stamp duty on the entire purchase price of any additional property was a smart move, discouraging short term investors and amature speculators without destabilising the entire property market overnight. After several years at 5% it’s probably time to raise it again and finish those off altogether.

What to do with the huge portfolio investors and those seeking to place foreign money into more secure British housing stock is another matter. Those challenges will involve much more radical changes than a subtle adjustment in stamp duty and that isn’t going to come from this government.

Different councils have very different approaches to non owner-occupied/2nd/additional properties, with some even giving owners grace periods if the property is empty/between tenants (E.G. in Birmingham landlord responsible for full CT from day 1 of vacated property, Cambridge 1 month grace (why??)). A 300% council tax hike on 2nd homes should never have been necessary, but if current SD and CGT rates are not enough to deter on a worthwhile scale in those areas then fair play to the councils for using the tools they have and taking the fight forward themselves.

Just got back from 2 weeks touring the middle bit of France. Middle week we stayed the Auvergne area, passed through there some years ago and always promised ourselves we'd go back for a longer visit. It was lovely, obviously it depends what floats your boat but if you're outdoorsy and into hiking, cycling and the like it's tremendous. Also some quite interesting touristy stuff about the dormant volcanoes in the area.

Off over to Ireland next week. Ferry into Dublin and they staying for a few days in Howth before driving over to Limerick for the rest of the week.
So any recommendations for places to visit across the isle while be great

In Dublin there's Kilmainham Prison, I recommend booking ahead, O'Connell Street and the GPO. Oh and find a traditional pub with Irish music

Plenty of good walking in the Limerick area, you can even book a trip out to the Aran Islands, home of Father Ted!

The Burren is an interesting landscape if you like that sort of thing, not far from Limerick.

I've had a look on tripadviser to see how much things have changed and will link here. Inisheer claims to be the real FT island but all 3 of the Arans make the claim, Inisheer, Inishmaan and Inishmore.
