Could find a generic holiday thread so this one will do...

Anyone ever been on a cruise?

Just wondering what the crack is on the first/last days between the flights and getting on/off the boat, some we're looking at leave you with pretty much a full day there but not sure what happens with your luggage in that interim period so can't decide whether it's better to go for a shorter time between so save on waiting around or longer time so you can do some exploring.

We only ever cruise from England. The luxury for us is not having to fly.
Leave Hereford at 8pm - on the ship at midday eating lovely food. Holiday has begun!
Sorted.

Where did you go?

We probably going to opt for the Med as a first crack at a cruise, generally like to get out and about doing different things on holiday and we were struggling to find anywhere we liked the look of so the prospect of stopping off in a different port with fresh things to do certainly appeals, think there's only the first day that's a full day of travelling then it's overnight travel with full days in each port.

Our top two were a Fjord Cruise with Celebrity Cruises and a European Cruise with Royal Caribbean.
We also did a Caribbean cruise with Princess for our honeymoon - regrettably that did include a flight but we stayed the night in a luxury hotel in Miami before departure so that was OK.

I know its not for everybody but we love it - especially the different ports of call that you would normally never go to and the food!

(We always try to avoid school holidays - grumpy bastards that we are!)

I'd like to go on a Scandinavian cruise at some point but think the other half would need some persuading to come round to the idea of a cold weather holiday, think the Med is the safer bet for the first time out as we at least know what we're in for destination wise even if the cruise situation turns out not to our liking.

We've always gone for 'adults exclusive' hotels on previous holidays, and generally outside the school holidays too, in a bid to avoid the masses of running/screaming children around the hotel.

Think some of the Eastern Med cruises look quite interesting too, good way to see some places like Croatia without having to commit to spending a full week there.

Depends when you go to Scandinavia. Was in Tromso 13 or so years ago in July and it was 27d

We're off on a Norwegian cruise in 3 weeks. We sail from Southampton though so I guess there won't be any issues with what to do with our luggage.

Do parents manage to sneak some in during the school holidays?

I prefer the whole resort to be miserable killjoy tosser free tbh. I much prefer to see young children having the freedom to enjoy themselves than the usual 18 - 30 groups or jack the lad stag do with their fuck you attitudes or indeed the cackling hen do types.

If you go on a cruise you have to be sociable as you'll be sat on a large table with, usually, another six people. So you'll have to talk to them. Also be aware that you have to tip your waiters and room attendant, so keep that in mind when you're budgeting. Food and drink is generally fairly priced unless you're on an American company liner in which case you'll get double-digit percentages added everywhere.

Oh, and if you do go out exploring on your own make sure that you leave plenty of time to get back to the ship because they *will* leave without you once their departure time comes.

I wouldn't bother going if I were you, Mark.

Majority of the stops are port towns/cities so it shouldn't be difficult to have a wander round and make your way back in time, think there was only Rome/Florence where there's a fair journey from the port so potentially ones to look at doing an organised trip if we end up going.

There seems to be a fair choice on dining options too, some your traditional large shared tables and others with more varied seating arrangements, not that it's really an issue as most hotel hotel restaurants usually have tables stacked almost on top of each other and plenty of guests like to get chatty when that happens.

Tipping could be a irritation.

I'm going to Crete on Wednesday, have been before but it was 12 years ago. Has anybody been lately who can recommend any tours/cruises/restaurants? We're staying just outside Chania.
