Best holiday destinations

Following on from the debate currently going on in things you like threadwould you recommend as the best holiday destination you have been to? UK or abroad.

I'm very well travelled but the best place I've been to recently was Valencia. Ace market in the centre of a really historic and beautiful town, then it's a tram ride out to a huge golden sandy beach. If you're so inclined you can walk the pits and start finish line of the F1 track down by the post end of the harbour.

We're off to Portugal in a couple of weeks for our first family holiday abroad. Going to Albufeira, Algarve. Haven't been since I was about 13, but I seem to remember Portuguese Steak being a thing of beauty! Can't wait!!

UK: we've had really nice holidays in St Ives and Fowey down in Cornwall, and Mundesley up in Norfolk.

Abroad: best family holidays we've had have been to Lake Garda in Italy and to Thailand.

Barcelona is hands down the best city I have ever been to. In the grand scheme of things, not far away, either.

It has literally everything you could ask for. Beach, port, culture, food etc etc.

Love The Algarve, was there earlier this month. I stay in Vilamoura not far from Albufeira. I travel all over when there but my favourite places are Lagos, Tavira and Silves.

Ibiza was good before it got too commercial. I went there a couple of times with my parents. Also Ireland is very nice, particularly on the west coast. I have had a few "golfing" weekends over there.

Ooh ta - I may well do. We haven't booked anything yet and it's just me and the GF so won't need to be child friendly or anything but I've no idea which area is best or anything like that.

I'm going to Almancil next April for a 'sten' do - never been to Portugal before.

I suppose this is a decent place to ask, but as well as Crete, if anyone has any recommendations for a nice 4-day long European-based holiday in late September, I'd be interested to hear them. Beach holiday, not city break and nowhere expensive - it'll just be a quick trip away on a tight budget.

I suppose we're looking for somewhere quiet (as in not a Magaluf type place - too old for that shit!) but with a small town nearby with local cuisines/markets etc, decent weather, that sort of thing.

I have never been to Africa. I always planned to, but never got round to it. And now that the good lady cannot travel far, I doubt I ever will.

That's a shame - I love Africa, may be a cliche but the sky is so big, nothing like sitting in the middle of nowhere drinking a beer watching the sun going down

A possibility! I've been to Majorca twice over the past 2 years but never been to Menorca.

Antigua certainly the most exotic place I've ever been to and best. Apart from that I've never traveled outside of Europe. Enjoyed everywhere I've been to on holiday in different ways. Really loved Scotland last year but apart from the one very chilly night (in August mind) the weather was fantastic, at least for the far north mind and that certainly added to the enjoyment

Again, some of the Algarvian resorts fit this perfectly. Vilamoura or Carvoeiro

Went to Crete last year and really enjoyed it. There are some lovely quiet and beautiful towns in Ibiza & Majorca if you look for them.
Went to the Algarve a few years ago and would love to go back.
I really enjoyed travelling around Florida (Not Disney!).
We stopped at Barbados on our honeymoon cruise and we would both love to go back.
Cornwall and the The Lake District are great destinations in this country.
Our next holiday is a week in a small cottage just outside Pembroke in South Wales. Looks to be some lovely beaches nearby for the dog (and us!) to enjoy.

Just tried to work out the furthest I've travelled in each direction;

Furthest north: St Andrews (Scotland, not the shithole in Small Heath)
Furthest south: Trinidad, Cuba
Furthest east: Rome
Furthest west: Vinales Valley, Cuba

Need to improve on these!
