Bellend commentators

First female commentator for BBC on a world cup game I think. It's PC gone mad eh!

She was actually very good. Saw the usual type complaining on twitter too, bizarre really.

Get over it.

This is why I get pissed off with people. DDW clearly didn't like the commentator but apparently she's above criticism because she's a woman and that people should just accept it and agree how brilliant she was.

I thought she was OK, no better than some but certainly not as bad as others. I think Champion and McCoist have been the best pairing by far personally.

I think the issue is people being MORE critical of someone because of their sex, and there is certainly an element of that.

No, no one is worse than Lawro, Neville is poor, but at least he seems happy to be there. Lawro is a whining, unfunny cunt who seems to hate a job that we'd all do for nothing.

Totally agree.

I also agree with Johnny regarding Champion and McCoist. Definitely my favourite so far.

Didn't see yesterday's game so couldn't comment on Sparks but I always thought she was ok on MOTD.

Criticise what she says all you like. DDW has clearly criticised her voice here, not the content of what she said. That's ironic given the black country accent or whatever accent no doubt any of us holds.

I thought she was ok, but her voice was not that pleasant. Plus marks for actually sticking to commentating on the game in play rather than moving off on all manner of tangents like the regular crew.

Given that people criticise Neville and Lawro for their voices and McCoist for his accent (admittedly not here much) then I think that's pretty ironic. I've met DDW and his accent certainly isn't Black Country. If DDW was discriminating because she was a woman then he'd get no support but he isn't and the social media high horse moralising is pathetic by the usual suspects.

Your post perfectly illustrates that you think she should be beyond criticism. Not quite the equality you're looking for there is it?

Which is exactly what I said. Not sure anyone on here has said she was the best thing since sliced bread.

DDW's post definitely gave the impression that his main issue with her was that she was a woman. Couldn't even use her name - just "the woman". (You never see people referring to "the man" in such situations - they use a name.) You may not like it, and I'm sure DDW's a stand-up guy, but that's how it read.

You mean that's how you've read it? I didn't read it that way at all.

Fair point, you are vegan.

I'm off to eat raw meat (mixed obvs) in my string vest.

Am I? First I've heard. My bacon sandwich this morning should have warned me, the bastard.

Quorn isn't vegan.

i only caught last 30 of the game yesterday. i think she's definitely improved from where she was. when i've heard her before her commentary sounded unnaturally forced. still some elements of that yesterday but it helped she had a co-commentator to bounce off a bit. i prefer her to motson :)

Nah, even if I was vegan, I wouldn't be into the substitute thing since I read the ingredients on some vegan bacon:

GG WHITES, SOYBEAN OIL WITH TBHQ FOR FRESHNESS, TEXTURED SOY PROTEIN CONCENTRATE, MODIFIED CORN STARCH, WHEAT GLUTEN, HYDROLYZED VEGETABLE PROTEIN (CORN GLUTEN, WHEAT GLUTEN, SOY), CONTAINS TWO PERCENT OR LESS OF GLYCERIN, SALT, SOY PROTEIN ISOLATE, SODIUM CITRATE, SODIUM PHOSPHATE, SUGAR, NATURAL AND ARTIFICIAL FLAVORS FROM NON-MEAT SOURCES, TORULA YEAST, CARAMEL COLOR, MONOCALCIUM PHOSPHATE, SODIUM TRIPOLYPHOSPHATE, NATURAL SMOKE FLAVOR, MALIC ACID, GUAR GUM, YEAST EXTRACT, LOCUST BEAN AND GUAR GUM, SODIUM SULFITE, CARRAGEENAN, RED #3, DISODIUM INOSINATE, DISODIUM GUANYLATE, NIACINAMIDE, IRON [FERROUS SULFATE], AUTOLYZED YEAST EXTRACT, NONFAT DRY MILK, YELLOW #6, VITAMIN B1 [THIAMIN MONONITRATE], VITAMIN B6 [PYRIDOXINE HYDROCHLORIDE], VITAMIN B2 [RIBOFLAVIN], CITRIC ACID, CYANOCOBALAMIN.

Anyway, back on topic....

I quite enjoyed Chris Sutton on 5 Live last night, doing the Spain match. He was quite amusing.

Listened to Sparks on Five Live whilst coming back from the cricket on Saturday and thought she did a reasonable job, but found it quite comical how she keep calling Terry Butcher, Terry Butcher.

I found Sparks voice ok. Certainly not worth switching off. And her commentary was fine too.

There were a few comments in the pub last night about her voice grating though. People just aren't used to a higher pitched voice on commentary.

There's no way that any new commentator would be analysed to this extent if they were male.

to be fair, Phil Neville was when he started. And now his media training has made him sound like an over-excited presenter on a children's wildlife show trying not to disturb a lion.
