They are generally pretty terrible (certainly the ones in leeds) with shite beer.Love a Sam Smith's pub
Ayinger Brau by any chance?Grew up with one as my local. It’s pretty grim beer, but the lager was ‘effective’.
Precisely!! I mean, that stated % had no bearing to reality.Ayinger Brau by any chance?
Really is an astonishing read on various levels.Interesting read on a deeply odd man
Humphrey’s world: how the Samuel Smith beer baron built Britain’s strangest pub chain
Since the 1970s, Humphrey Smith has acquired scores of pubs and historic properties around the UK. But time after time, he has left the buildings empty. Why has he allowed his empire to moulder?www.theguardian.com
Yeah, Sam's originally brewed it under licence at Tadcaster. Humphrey decided not to renew and brewed their own version - 'Taddy' IIRC. They also brewed Double Four as another competitor to swill like Carling and a low alcohol version called Alpine.Precisely!! I mean, that stated % had no bearing to reality.
Yep. No swearing, no devices, mobile phones or TV. Managers sacked for not having a sufficient head on the beer. Humphrey really is a strange character.I got told off in one in Bradford once on an away day for swearing!
There are plenty of people who like the beers though. I personally can't abide them. They're just not my taste. The best thing you can say about the beer is that it’s cheap. Bloody rough though. Which is odd, as they seem to have spent decades trying to perfect the same Yorkshire bitter right in the heart of first class brewing country. Putting the way they (he) run the estate to one side, you’d guess the beer is one bit they’d get right?
Trying to get it right, or trying to get it to taste as it did in some mythical past? The best thing you can say about the beer is that it’s cheap. Bloody rough though.
