Beer

Awesome pubs with great beer situated by a station are fantastic......

Aren't they, Kenny, Paddy and co?

Screech Owl 5% IPA from Castle Rock Brewery is good if you can find it, based Nottingham way I think. Came across this by chance in the Cross at Kinver, they had a little beer festival on the go.

The Castle Rock brewery has a pub attached to it and is located conveniently close to the train station in Nottingham if you are ever over there for football or cricket. Spent a couple of hours in there after the first day of the test vs India last summer but have to say I'd had one or two too many to give a true judgement on its ales.

I was in there the day Kites scored the winner before and after the game. Great pub and great beer.

I used to go in the Western about 15 years ago, it was always great for the ales. Funny that the station in Codsalls not bad with the beer, must be something about rail staff

Cool. It's about a 20 min walk from Burton Albion's ground or a 5 min car ride.

I've only ever been in once myself as I'm not really much of a drinker but it was a very nice little establishment.

Just to report back on my Burton trip. The Burton Bridge Brewery is a top boozer with several excellent beers. The Porter is particularly good. Another good pub is the Coopers Tavern. Serves Bass and various Joules (?) beers from the barrel. Possibly my new favourite beer town...

Apart from the fact that while walking to the Burton Albion ground a fucker in a white van sped past us and drenched us in Coke. Straight in the face and all over my clothes. Spent the match soaking wet and sticky as fuck. What a shit thing to do.

Nice one. With you being at the Copper's Tavern you were literally a minute's walk away from The Devonshire Arms which is another top ale pub. It's linked on the Burton Bridge Brewery website as an associated pub.

My favourite beers from down south are Dark Star Hophead (mentioned earlier), Hop Back Summer Lightning and Arundel Gold.

There's one my brother's local in Horsham serves, but I can't remember it's name - I'll ask him tonight. It's amazing, but you won't find it outside Sussex unfortunately.

Harvey's? It's the big Sussex, Lewes-brewed ale.

We're spoiled for Dark Star down here. As I'm sure you know, it originated in the Evening Star pub near Brighton station.

My own local serves (at various times) three Dark Star beers: Hophead, APA and Original. The Original is an excellent dark beer comparable to Theakston's Old Peculier.

Yes, I've been to the Evening Star - absolutely amazing pub.

It isn't Harvey's - I must ask my brother what it's called.

Ah, next time. And there will definitely be a next time. We had a top time, Coke incident apart.

They apparently do a tip top pint of Pedigree in the "Devvy".

Had one pint of Pedigree in the Sump, a pub near our B&B. Not a big fan, tbh. I think I got put off years ago when I had a really bad pint and got very very sick (could have been the 6 preceding pints of various beers, but I'm blaming the Pedigree.)

King and Barnes is a Horsham brewery. I always find it funny that the Evening Star is eulogised so much on here. When I lived in Brighton it was a rank Watneys pub and the good beer pubs near the station were the Lord Nelson (unfortunately owned by a Villa fan), the Edinburgh, Sussex Yeoman and the one on the corner with the theatre upstairs whose name I can't remember.

You'll never get a good pint of it in The Sump. Nice pub, shit beer.

I thought it was a strange pub. Quite chicken-in-a-basket-&-lager. Not a real ale twat in sight. Apart from me, of course.

We popped up to another pub called the Anglesey Arms. They did quite a nice pint of Banks' mild in there. Had the loudest jukebox ever, too.

Can't say I've ever been in there in my life. There are a LOT of pubs in Burton and the surrounding suburbs with it being a brewing town.

How much is a pint in Wolverhampton and surrounding areas?

In Brighton we pay anything from £3.20 (Dark Star Hophead) to £4.50 (Pilsner Urquell or Peroni). The five-quid pint is probably not too far away.

You're looking at £2.50 for a pint of ale if you're lucky, but more likely £2.75 - £3.

My local is now £2.70 for a pint of glow after it went up 10p last week.

That's what we were paying about four years ago. Brighton takes its lead from London, unfortunately, when it comes to prices.

I remember in Manchester when I had to pay £2 a pint for the first time, and being disgusted. Must have been around 2003-ish.

I remember working in a pub in London in about 1986, when the price of Lowenbrau (our most expensive lager) went up from 97p to £1.01.

Cue lots of disgruntled regulars... 'I never thought I'd live to see the day', etc.
