A jolly good read?

LJ, I have just read "The Crimes of Jack the Ripper". And after finishing it, I remain of the opinion that Dr Tumblety was the Ripper.

Still doubt it is Tumbelty myself Frank. Tumbelty was over 6 foot, & all the sightings of the victims with a solitary male close to the time of likely death are with a person between 5'4" and 5'8".

Hutchinson is a pretty good suspect imo, though there isn't enough hardcore evidence linking him except for his very strange & detailed statement.

Just to say - I really enjoyed the Dark Half when I read it. It is no Stand or Shining but is a great read. Along with It and Misery probably the best of King's later horror output.

Not read IT, or Misery - but Misery is an excellent film. The Dark Half was a good book.

From memory, I enjoyed reading Needful Things.

Not sure whether you'd class it as horror, but I recall reading The Green Mile when first bought out as a series of small books & that was superb.

Can anyone recommend good history books on the English Civil war please? I decided that this is an area I know little about, & thought I might like to investigate a little.

I've just downloaded a file containing 4001 eBooks for the iPad. A quick glance and fair to say to I have never heard of most of what I can see. So I have plenty of random reading over the coming months/years.

The first book I will look at, simply because I recognised the name will be "A Journey, My Political Life by Mr T Blair"

Just re-reading Cannery Row by John Steinbeck. Great observation on everyday life and fantastic language, though some of it might be considered distinctly non-PC these days.

The English Civil War is a subject I know little about, and considering my home address is 6 miles from Bosworth Battlefield , is somewhat remiss of me.

You must find time to read "IT". After "The Stand", it is Stephen Kings' best offering.

Bosworth was 1485. The Civil war was in the 1640's.

Correct langers. Bosworth was earlier. I have a big interest in reading historical texts, although I prefer European stuff like the thirty years war. I will have a dig on amazon and let you know what I find.

I love history. I have an incredibly geeky ability where I can list all the English monarchs from William I onwards in order. I might get one or two wrong (early Plantagenets) but otherwise I get them right. And that includes Lady Jane Grey.

Handy for pub quizzes actually.

Gods fire, englands fury by Michael braddick appears to be the big authoritative tome. Blair worden has done on introductory book that has decent review

Richard Bachmann books were very good. I particularly enjoyed " The Long Walk".

Richard Bachmann was of course a pseudonym for .............

I did that the other day on sporcle. Did very well but forgot Queen Anne

The Dune trilogy was an excellent, if at times, heavy read. Well worth sticking with.

How many Duncan Idaho's were there?

Mr's Rov has bought me a Kindle for my Birthday next week, recommendations for downloading welcome thanks.

Started reading Game of Thrones on Thursday, I'm already 200 pages in. I'm not one for the Fantasy Epic genre usually, but this is utterly brilliant. I find it sticking in my craw to be agreeing so wholeheartedly with Langdale...
