Welcome to Wolves Marshall Munetsi

I think these last few months have been Doherty's best in a Wolves shirt in terms of looking like a PL player. He had better production under Nuno, but that was in a very specific role built to negate his weaknesses. Nuno himself saw that as a barrier to progression and moved him on...how that went isn't really relevant here.

Now he's playing in a position that's not unique or tailored to protect him, he's been decent. His age means it's only going to ever be short term, but it makes it difficult to have a meaningful Djiga discussion because he's in on merit. That said if we'd signed Danso he'd have spent the last couple of months on the bench.

Fair point. I’d still expect him to be able to play a part now though. Granted doc has done ok/well
I’m probably a minority in this, but I do feel that Bueno gets a little more stick than he has earned, and that’s trickling down to Nasser because Santi is still the one getting subbed on.

Either way, we seem just about safe now, so perhaps a bit moot.

I don’t ok bueno is terrible, but don’t think he’s very good. So easily replaceable/upgradable IMV and you’d hope hope a 10m centre half would do that.

That being said, with doc playing as he is, and a CB coming on at end of a game, I can understand why Nasser hasn’t been thrown into that situation being a new league and a relegation dog fight

Correct me if I'm wrong and I'm certain the experts will do.

VP has repeatedly stated that he likes 3 defenders, 1 of which is a fullback. Doherty fits that role for VP, Djiga is a CH IIRC, so he has to get ahead of Agbadou and Toti as the alternative. Both of those are pretty much cemented into those 2 CB roles.

Just a thought...

I think what he’s getting at more than the third being a FB by trade is that they need to be comfortable stepping into and passing out from midfield. But I reserve the right to be wrong.

Also I doubt he would come out and tell the truth. “Doc? He’s at CB because he’s shit elsewhere.” ;)

Doherty has had some good games (probably his best one on Tuesday) in this role and some bloody awful ones that seem to get ignored or forgotten very quickly, he's clearly someone we need to improve on as a matter of urgency.

You would have to say, him resigning has ended up being a success in the end. No reason he cant continue to be a back up option next season which will see out his contract i think? You've got to hand it to him really.

I still maintain that some of the worst team performances I have seen from Wolves in our latest stint in the Premier league happened during those magical first two seasons, they get forgotten about too.

Overall he's been OK, he's done a job. But yeah we need to move on sharpish. Still an option next season though by default.

Good move by VP early on to spot he could perhaps do a job there and slot him in

The annoying thing about Doherty is that the periods of his best form, and I definitely count this current run as right up there, are usually when he's had extended runs in the team. You almost have to let him 'play through' a period where he'll cost you points before he gets into a rhythm where he's up to an acceptable standard. Whenever he's in and out of the team he's a mess.

So using him as a back up option is always going to end up costing you IMO.

Leicester was his first game at RCB wasn't it?

He made a mistake v Forest 3 months ago now) but was generally OK, and wasn't great v Newcastle (no one was). Other than that he's played well there. Bad stuff hasn't been forgotten, it just hasn't happened.

Which games are you referring to?

Imo his last bad game was Chelsea 2½ months ago, we've played 8 in the PL since then. An elite centre half would have closed Everton's goal down, but nobody is claiming he's that. He's unlikely to be first choice next season, hopefully either Djiga or Mosquera take his place, but he deserves his flowers for the way he's played.

Huddersfield did the double over us in a season when they won 3 games, they and the defeat the previous season to them were all grim.
There were a few games under Nuno where we really struggled against teams down at the bottom, the Huddersfield ones are most obvious, but I'm sure there were others.

Oh they were! We made Aaron Mooy look like Zidane.

Think there have been plenty worse since though, the huge defeats to Arsenal and Brighton, the 3-0 home defeat to Brighton was

I didn’t see the home defeat to Brighton so can’t comment, not that it’s relevant to the point I was actually making. As much as I’d love to disappear down a rabbit hole I’ll pass. Huddersfield away was, IMO just about as bad as it gets, Raul was bloody useless, yet in the big picture of the season it’s largely forgotten, that was my point.

Fair enough. He’s with us for 12 more months and no one else is going to sign him you would think so he’s back up at best you would hope…….I mean if we get say a £5m fee for him from a promoted team on the back of his performances towards the back end of this season then we’d probably all drive him there ourselves I would think. Imagine, £20m in combined fees! But anyway, it hasn’t turned out to be the disaster we all thought it would be.

He’s been a big part of the rescue operation since we got rid of mr teeth.
